06:00 EDTMAR, HOTHoteliers look to Africa, WSJ reports
Marriott International (MAR) is expanding to Africa. Most of Africa "is a bit of a blank piece of paper for the hospitality industry," says Alex Kyriakidis, chief of Marriott's Middle East and Africa division. They're joining competitors who are expanding in the region, including Hilton Worldwide and Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group, which owns the Radisson Blu brand. Growth in sub-Saharan Africa is expected to reach 5.4% this year, higher than any region except developing Asia, according to the IMF. Reference Link

Governor Andrew Cuomo released the Upstate NY Gaming Economic Development Act, which will establish three destination resorts with gaming in Upstate New York. The legislation authorizes three upstate Destination Resorts to enhance tourism development. Destination Resorts will be selected only on merit by the gaming commission or a separate board to be selected by the commission. No Destination Resort will be authorized in New York City, and no Destination Resort will be located downstate until a minimum of five years after the first upstate Destination Resort opens.
