Southwest Airlines launched an international future the airline by inaugurating service to three Caribbean destinations from three of its U.S. gateway cities. To commemorate the beginning of a new chapter for the carrier, Southwest Vacations is offering up to $200 off select travel packages booked now through July 14 for travel July 4 through January 4, 2015.

Southwest Airlines announced earlier that it has filed an application with the U.S. Department of Transportation to add its first destination in Central America with daily roundtrip service between Baltimore/Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport and Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose, Costa Rica, beginning March 7, 2015. Costa Rica will be the sixth near-international country served by Southwest Airlines from its U.S. gateway cities.

Stifel added Southwest (LUV) to its Stifel Select List and increased its price target on the stock to $55 from $30. The firm raised its estimates for the company based on stronger than expected revenue performance through the first two months of Q3 and a more favorable outlook for CASM in 2015. Additionally, the firm expects the company to introduce baggage fees, possibly within two years, in the wake of JetBlue's (JBLU) decision to do so. Stifel keeps a Buy rating on Southwest.

Southwest Airlines flew 9.6B revenue passenger miles, or RPMs, in August, a 4.9% increase from the 9.2B RPMs flown in August 2013. Available seat miles, or ASMs, remained relatively flat compared to the August 2013 level of 11.3B. The August 2014 load factor was 85.5%, compared to 81.3% in August 2013. For August 2014, passenger revenue per ASM is estimated to have increased in the 5%-6% as compared to August 2013.
