Available seat miles increased 3.4% to 10.8B from the December 2012 level of 10.5B. The December 2013 load factor was 82.8%, compared to 78% in December 2012. For December 2013, passenger revenue per ASM is estimated to have increased in the 14%-15% range compared to December 2012. For the fourth quarter, the company flew 25.7B RPMs, compared to 24.8B RPMs flown for the same period in 2012, an increase of 3.3%. Fourth quarter ASMs increased 2.2% to 31.9B from fourth quarter 2012 ASMs of 31.2B. The fourth quarter load factor was 80.4%, compared to 79.6% for the same period in 2012.

After a fire occurred in the Federal Aviation Administration's primary Chicago air-traffic control facility Aurora Illinois, flights in and out of Chicago's main airports have ceased, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing comments from the FAA. Midway International Airport is a main hub for Southwest (LUV) while United Continental (UAL) operates a hub out of O'Hare International Airport. Reference Link

Southwest Airlines signed an agreement with Red Rocks Biofuels to buy low carbon renewable jet fuel, made using forest residues that will help reduce the risk of wildfires in the Western U.S. The airline's agreement with RRB covers the purchase of approximately 3M gallons per year. The product will be used at Southwest's Bay Area operations with first delivery expected in 2016. RRB's first plant will convert approximately 140K dry tons of woody biomass feedstock into at least 12M gallons per year of renewable jet, diesel, and naphtha fuels.
