12:31 EDTBAOn The Fly: Top stock stories at midday
Stocks on Wall Street were higher at midday after having been on a bit of a see-saw during morning trading. The averages opened in positive territory, soon turned negative, then back into positive ground following the release of a better than expected existing home sales report. The housing data was followed by a lift in the averages, which remained in positive ground near noon. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., existing home sales rose 6.1% to a 5.19M rate in March, which was better than the expected 3.1% increase to a rate of 5.03M. Crude oil inventories built up by 5.32M barrels last week, which was more than the consensus forecast for a 3.2M barrel build. In Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 average closed above 20,000 for the first time since April 2000. In Europe, Germany raised its economic growth forecast for 2015 to 1.8%, which was up from the 1.5% growth it said it expected in January. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of McDonald's (MCD) advanced 2% after the company reported headline earnings that missed expectations but also said it is developing a turnaround plan to improve its performance and deliver "enduring profitable growth" that it plans to share in the first week of May. Also rising after its quarterly report was another globally recognized brand, Coca-Cola (KO), whose shares gained 1% after its comparable earnings per share topped the consensus estimate. A third member of the Dow, Boeing (BA), slid over 2.5% after its earnings beat expectations but its revenue fell short of the consensus forecast... Visa (V) rose 5% and MasterCard (MA) advanced over 4% after China's State Council announced overnight that the country will regulate the market access for bankcard transaction clearing institutions, which analysts think might allow both companies to compete for the processing of domestic transactions in the country. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Angie's List (ANGI), which jumped 12% after the company reported it was profitable in the first quarter and announced an exclusive relationship that will see carpet manufacturer Shaw Industries give the company's members exclusive product offers. Also higher was ASML (ASML), which gained 11% after announcing that it has signed an agreement with one of its "major U.S. customers" to deliver a minimum of 15 ASML EUV, or Extreme Ultraviolet, lithography systems. Afterward, Summit Research said it thinks the most likely buyer is Intel (INTC), which the firm believes does not want to be left behind if TSMC (TSM) puts EUV to use in 10nm processing. Among the noteworthy losers was Natural Resource Partners (NRP), which dropped 19% after the company slashed its quarterly distribution by 75% to 9c per unit. Also lower following their earnings reports were ADTRAN (ADTN), which fell over 9%, Cree (CREE), which slid 9%, and Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG), which declined 6%. INDEXES: Near midday, the Dow was up 28.69, or 0.16%, to 17,978.28, the Nasdaq was up 6.66, or 0.13%, to 5,020.77, and the S&P 500 was up 5.24, or 0.25%, to 2,102.53.

12:35 EDTRTNCybersecurity stocks rally after Raytheon announces joint venture
The shares of cybersecurity companies are rising after Raytheon (RTN), a major defense contractor, announced that it was forming a cybersecuity joint venture with a company in the sector, Websense. Raytheon will acquire control of Websense as part of the deal. WHAT'S NEW: Raytheon announced that it had agreed to form a joint venture with Websense, which is owned by Vista Equity Partners. Under the deal, Websense will combine with Raytheon Cyber Products, a business unit of Raytheon's Intelligence, Information and Services segment. Raytheon will pay about $1.57B for an 80.3% stake in the joint venture. Additionally, Raytheon will pay $1.9B, net of cash acquired, to buy Websense. Of the $1.9B, $600M will be in the form of an intercompany loan to the joint venture. The combined company will be treated as a separate business segment of Raytheon, the defense contractor stated. John McCormack, the CEO of Websense, will be the CEO of the unit. The deal is expected to close next quarter. ANALYST REACTION: In a note to investors earlier today, Wells Fargo analyst Sam Pearlstein wrote that the deal will raise Raytheon's non-GAAP, 2015 adjusted earnings per share by about 6c. However, the transaction will lower Raytheon's EPS on a GAAP basis for 2015 by 48c, driven by amortization of intangibles, deferred revenue, and one-time costs, according to Pearlstein. The analyst kept an Outperform rating on Raytheon shares. WHAT'S NOTABLE: Cybersecurity company Check Point (CHKP) reported stronger than expected first quarter results today. Its Q2 guidance was roughly in-line with analysts' consensus estimates at the midpoints of the ranges given for earnings and revenue. Additionally, Check Point announced a partnership with another cybersecurity company, FireEye (FEYE). The companies said they would share threat intelligence to protect customers from modern advanced attacks. PRICE ACTION: In early afternoon trading,Check Point jumped 5.4% to $86.14, FireEye rose 3.8% to $42.39, Palo Alto (PANW) gained 2.4% to $146, Fortinet (FTNT) added 1.7% to $34.28, Proofpoint (PFPT) advanced 1.7% to $58, and Raytheon slid 0.3% to $107.40.

14:02 EDTRTNRaytheon to test new multi-mode seeker for Tomahawk cruise missile
Using company-funded independent research and development investment, Raytheon is preparing for a multi-mode seeker test designed for a Tomahawk Block IV cruise missile. The captive flight test, using a modified Tomahawk Block IV missile nose cone, will be designed to demonstrate the processor's ability to broadcast active radar as well as passively receive target electromagnetic radiation, which was demonstrated in February 2014. This is a critical step in enabling the missile to strike moving targets on land and at sea. During the test, planned for the second quarter, the nosecone of a Tomahawk Block IV missile will be equipped with active and passive radio frequency antennas integrated with Raytheon's new modular, multi-mode processor and fitted to a T-39 aircraft. Flying at high subsonic speed and at varying altitudes, the aircraft will simulate a Tomahawk flight regime. The multi-mode seeker and multi-function processor will operate the active radar against fixed and mobile targets on land and at sea, in a complex, high density electromagnetic environments.
