Stocks on Wall Street were higher in the last day of the week, and month, as investors brace for a September that has the potential to be full of central bank news from home and abroad. Stocks opened higher in anticipation of Fed Chairman Bernanke’s speech in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. There was little interest by investors in the trio of economic reports that were released prior. Investors chose to focus on the Fed Chairman’s speech and, when ambiguous headlines crossed the wires, the knee jerk reaction was to sell stocks. Before the averages fell into negative territory statements reiterating that the Fed stood ready with additional tools to help stimulate the economy buoyed hopes for "QE3." As the day progressed, the news flow slowed, though the averages held as investors took off to enjoy the final weekend of the summer... ECONOMIC EVENTS: Domestically, the August Chicago PMI fell to 53.0 from 53.7, as expected. The University of Michigan final reading on August consumer sentiment rose to 74.3 from 72.3 a month ago. Factory orders rose 2.8% in July, topping expectations... COMPANY NEWS: Shares of US Airways (LCC) rose 26c, or 2.50%, to $10.66 after the company and AMR Corporation (AAMRQ) said they entered into a non-disclosure agreement to evaluate a potential merger of US Air with American Airlines... MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers were Splunk (SPLK), up $3.90, or 12.79%, to $34.40 after its better than expected sales and guidance, and Esterline (ESL), up $6.86, or 12.96%, to $59.80 following its bullish Q4 guidance. Noteworthy losers included Zumiez (ZUMZ), down $3.03, or 9.40%, to $29.19 after its earnings, though JPMorgan said the sell-off creates a buying opportunity. Also lower were shares of Limelight Networks (LLNW), down 20c, or 7.97%, to $2.31 after an appeals court overturned a prior ruling and said the company must face patent infringement claims made by Akamai (AKAM)... INDICES: The Dow gained 90.13, or 0.69%, to 13,090.84; the Nasdaq rose 18.25, or 0.60%, to 3,066.96; and the S&P 500 added 7.10, or 0.51%, to 1,406.58. | |
