News Breaks | | | | August 31, 2012 | | 12:21 EDT | | SPLK, LCC, ZUMZ, FB, NAV, AAMRQ | On The Fly: Midday Wrap Stocks on Wall Street were higher at midday after Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke reiterated his willingness to act as needed to combat the "daunting" challenges facing the U.S. economy. Stocks opened higher in anticipation of Bernanke’s speech in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Investors generally ignored the economic data that was released during the opening 30 minutes of the trading session. The averages began to weaken, however, following the summary release of the Chairman’s speech, which at first blush looked disappointing. The chairman reasserted that the Fed stood ready with additional tools to help stimulate the economy. Bernanke also defended the current policies, stating both QE1 and QE2 boosted growth by 3.0% and led to 2M new jobs. After a brief dip, the averages regained their footing and then drifted, as they most likely will for the remainder of the pre-holiday session... ECONOMIC EVENTS: Aside from the central bankers' meeting in Jackson Hole, three U.S. economic reports were released. The August Chicago PMI fell to 53.0 from 53.7, as expected. The University of Michigan final reading on August consumer sentiment rose to 74.3 from 72.3 a month ago. Factory orders rose 2.8% in July, topping expectations... COMPANY NEWS: US Airways (LCC) and AMR Corporation (AAMRQ), the bankrupt parent company of American Airlines, entered into a non-disclosure agreement, under which the companies said they would work in close collaboration with AMR's unsecured creditors to evaluate a potential merger. Shares of US Airways rose about 3% following the joint announcement... MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers were Splunk (SPLK), up 16% after its Q3 revenues came in higher than expected and it raised its full-year sales view, and Navistar (NAV), up over 6% after the EPA issued its Final Rule for nonconformance penalties for on-highway heavy-duty diesel engines. Among the noteworthy losers were Zumiez (ZUMZ), down 11% following its disappointing results and guidance, and Facebook (FB), down over 4% to new lows after a BMO Capital analyst said the company is losing momentum and Merrill Lynch said it expects further selling pressure on shares from multiple coming lock-up expirations... INDICES: Near noon, the Dow was up 76.89, or 0.59%, to 13,077.60; the Nasdaq was up 10.84, or 0.36%, to 3,059.55; and the S&P 500 was up 5.26, or 0.38%, to 1,404.74. | |
