12:29 EDTNFLXOn The Fly: Midday Wrap
Stocks on Wall Street were lower at midday, though well off their worst levels. The market opened sharply lower following less than stellar quarterly reports from some of the countryís largest corporations and a number of in-focus "momentum" names such as Netflix (NFLX) and eBay (EBAY). The early drop extended the marketís recent declines and put the averages close to correction territory. The market moved off its lows after a regional Fed president, who'd recently been seen as hawkish, said in an interview that the central bank should consider delaying the end of quantitative easing and that it should be more data driven than time driven. The comments were attributed as the catalyst for a reversal that brought the averages all the way back to positive territory, though the market has once again drifted back into negative ground. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., initial jobless claims decreased by 23K to 264K last week to hit their lowest level since April 2000. Industrial production rebounded 1.0% in September, beating expectations for a rise of 0.4% and pushing capacity utilization up to 79.3% from 78.7% previously. The Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index fell 1.8 points to 20.7 in October, which was not as low as the expected 19.9 reading. The NAHB homebuilder sentiment index fell 5 points to 54 in October, versus expectations for it to hold steady at 59. Also of significant note, St. Louis Fed President James Bullard, who is not a voting FOMC member though was quoted recently saying that a rate hike might be appropriate as soon as early next year, reversed course this morning and told Bloomberg in an interview that the Fed should consider delaying an end to its quantitative easing program. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of Netflix (NFLX) plunged 22% after the company provided lower than expected Q4 profit guidance and reported lower than expected subscriber data. The move after its earnings report last night also follows Time Warner's (TWX) announcement yesterday of plans for a standalone HBO online service and Piper Jaffray saying it believes CBS (CBS) will similarly launch an over-the-top Showtime offering next year... eBay (EBAY) shares slipped nearly 6% after the company missed revenue expectations for the third quarter and lowered its outlook for fiscal 2014. Following the report, analysts at both RBC Capital and CLSA downgraded the stock. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Chesapeake Energy (CHK), which rose 17% after the company announced that it sold Marcellus and Utica shale assets to Southwestern Energy (SWN) for $5.375B. Shares of the buyer Southwestern, however, fell 8% after the deal announcement. Also lower was Extreme Networks (EXTR), which dropped almost 19% after cutting its first quarter outlook citing significant delays with its North American deals as well as headwinds in Europe. INDEXES: Near midday, the Dow was down 28.46, or 0.18%, to 16,113.28, the Nasdaq was down 16.16, or 0.38%, to 4,199.16, and the S&P 500 was down 2.08, or 0.11%, to 1,860.41.

17:05 EDTNFLXNetflix says primary cause of subscriber decline was subscription price increase
The company said, "Year on year net additions in the U.S. were down to 1M in Q3 compared to 1.3M in 3Q13. As best we can tell, the primary cause is the slightly higher prices we now have compared to a year ago. Slightly higher prices result in slightly less growth, other things being equal, and this is manifested more clearly in higher adoption markets such as the U.S. In hindsight, we believe that late Q2 and early Q3, the impact of higher prices appeared to be offset for about two months by the large positive reception to Season two of Orange is the New Black. We remain happy with the price changes and growth in revenue and will continue to improve our service, with better content, better streaming and better choosing. The effect of slightly higher prices is factored into our Q4 forecast."

16:28 EDTJCPOn The Fly: Closing Wrap
Stocks on Wall Street spent most of today's quiet session see-sawing across the flat-line before dropping sharply in the final hour of trading and closing at their lows. The market opened in negative territory but soon made a move to the upside and appeared ready to break the recent market slide that has seen the S&P lose about 5% of its value. Before the averages gained significant steam, they reversed again and moved back into negative ground. The averages moved in a fairly narrow range for most of the afternoon, before accelerating to the downside with conviction in the final hour of trading. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., no economic data of note was reported and banks and bond markets were closed in observance of the Columbus Day holiday. In China, the nation's customs administration reported a trade surplus of about $31B for September. Exports in the month increased 15.3% from a year earlier, beating expectations and making for the biggest monthly increase since February 2013. Imports rose 7%, significantly outpacing the consensus projection for a 2% decline. COMPANY NEWS: The Wall Street Journal reported that CSX (CSX) was approached by a larger rival, Canadian Pacific (CP), about a possible merger. However, Credit Suisse analyst Allison Landry wrote in a note to investors that a merger between the two would not be able to occur, due to high regulatory hurdles. Still, CSX rose $1.76, or 5.88%, to $31.70 following the Journal's report, while Canadian Pacific fell $4.40, or 2.32%, to $184.97... Shares of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCAU) made their debut on the New York Stock Exchange and opened at $9 per share. The stock of the newly merged company closed trading down about 1% at $8.92... J.C. Penney (JCP) selected Marvin Ellison, who is currently executive vice president of stores at Home Depot (HD), to become its next CEO. The stock, which was also downgraded to Sell from Neutral at UBS this morning, spent much of the trading day in positive ground but moved lower late in the session and closed down 3c, or 0.42%, at $7.09. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Alnylam (ALNY), which advanced $13.83, or 18.98%, to $86.68 after the company announced data from study of its treatment for patients with familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy and Piper Jaffray raised its price target on the stock to $133 from $101 citing the trial results. Among the noteworthy losers was AutoNation (AN), which fell $4.11, or 8.01%, to $47.21 after another company in the same sector, Lithia Motors (LAD), lowered its profit outlook for the third and fourth quarter and issued a lower than expected earnings forecast for fiscal 2015. Shares of Lithia, meanwhile, plunged $16.85, or 20.84%, to $64.01. Also lower were shares of GoPro (GPRO), which fell $8.38, or 9.85%, to $76.67 after a French journalist reported that the son of racing legend Michael Schumacher attributed the severity of his father's brain injury following a skiing accident on the GoPro camera mounted to his helmet. INDEXES: The Dow fell 223.03, or 1.35%, to 16,321.07, the Nasdaq dropped 62.58, or 1.46%, to 4,213.66, and the S&P 500 declined 31.39, or 1.65%, to 1,874.74.

12:04 EDTJCPJ.C. Penney announces growth initiatves for 2015-2017
At its 2014 analyst meeting in New York City today, J. C. Penney Company presented its plans for restoring sustainable profitable growth at the Company over the next three years."JCPenney is in a far stronger position today than it was when we began our turnaround effort 18 months ago. While we recognize that there's more work to be done in a highly competitive retail environment, I couldn't be more encouraged by the significant progress our teams have made in such a short amount of time," said Myron E. Ullman, III, CEO. "I am confident that the initiatives we are putting in place will fuel new growth and earn greater customer loyalty as we pursue our vision to become the preferred shopping choice for Middle America." The Company is focused on attracting a new and younger customer by investing in popular in-store attractions that can only be found at JCPenney. To that end, the Company announced the expansion of its highly successful partnership with Sephora, as the companies have agreed to open additional Sephora inside JCPenney locations through 2017, entering new and smaller markets as the first major beauty destination in town. The Company also provided financial performance goals that include achieving $1.2 billion in EBITDA in 2017. This reflects expectations for top line improvements associated with incremental growth potential, as well as continued market share gains in its underlying business, which represents a $3.5B sales opportunity. Of that amount, the Company conservatively expects to realize approximately $2B in incremental sales over the next three years, resulting in mid-single digit sales growth during that period.
