Stocks on Wall Street were sharply higher after a strong U.S. jobs report that showed 203,000 jobs were added last month, taking the unemployment rate down to 7%, its lowest level since November 2008. The averages opened higher and, after a late morning pause, moved higher through the second half of the session to close near their best levels of the day. Despite today's gains, the Dow fell about 0.4% for the week, while the S&P 500 was fractionally lower and the Nasdaq logged fractional gains. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., employers added 203K jobs in November, which was significantly better than the 180K forecast. The headline unemployment rate, which was expected to dip to 7.2%, slip all the way to 7%. A report rescheduled after government shutdown showed that personal spending rose 0.3% in October, versus the expected increase of 0.2%, while income fell 0.1%, versus the expected increase of 0.3%. The Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment index for December came in with a 82.5 reading that beat the 76.5 forecast. COMPANY NEWS: Intel (INTC) shares gained 56c, or 2.31%, to $24.82 after Citigroup upgraded the stock to Buy from Neutral, citing stabilizing demand from corporations for personal computers. Also upgrading the stock was research firm Drexel Hamilton, which similarly cited improved PC demand as a reason for its upgrade... J.C. Penney (JCP) shares fell 77c or 8.70%, to $8.08 after the embattled retailer last night disclosed in a filing with the SEC that it received a subpoena from the agency in September regarding its liquidity, cash position, and debt and equity financing, as well as the company's underwritten public offering of common stock announced on September 26. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Auxilium Pharmaceuticals (AUXL), up $2.31, or 11.95%, to $21.64 after the FDA approved the company's Xiaflex treatment for men with Peyronie's disease. Also higher was Pacific Sunwear (PSUN), up 52c, or 18.84%, to $3.28 after the teen retailer reported third quarter results that were in-line with expectations and the stock was upgraded to Buy from Neutral at B. Riley. Among the noteworthy losers was InterOil (IOC), which fell $33.13, or 37.38%, to $55.50 after announcing a deal to sell a 61.3% interest in Petroleum Retention License 15 in Papua New Guinea to Total (TOT). Also lower following disappointing earnings reports were salon products and services retailer Ulta Salon (ULTA), down $24.24, or 20.54%, to $93.76, and closeout retailer Big Lots (BIG), down $4.66, or 12.55%, to $32.47. INDEXES: The Dow was up 198.69, or 1.26%, to 16,020.20; the S&P 500 was up 20.06, or 1.12%, to 1,805.09; the Nasdaq was up 29.36, or 0.73%, to 4,062.52.

IBM (IBM) has held talks with Globalfoundries, Intel (INTC) and Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) regarding its semiconductor manufacturing operations, and Globalfoundries appears to be in the lead as the most likely potential buyer, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter. IBM initially asked for more than $2B and bids have come in "north of $1B," the report noted, adding that Intel is still involved, but TSMC has dropped out of the talks. Reference Link
