Stocks finished higher for the week after the European Central Bank unveiled a larger than expected bond buying plan and earnings season in the U.S. picked up steam. MACRO NEWS: The European Central Bank announced that it would buy EUR 60B of government and private bonds per month through September 2016. Reports before the ECB's official announcement had suggested that the central bank would buy EUR 50B of bonds per month... On a negative note, the International Monetary Fund cut its 2015 global growth outlook to 3.5% from 3.8%... U.S. economic data was mixed, as weekly jobless claims and sales of existing homes in December were worse than expected, but the index of leading economic indicators and new housing permits for December came in above the consensus outlook. COMPANY NEWS: Netflix (NFLX), Starbucks (SBUX), firearm maker Smith & Wesson (SWHC), and Southwest Airlines (LUV) were among the companies whose stocks rose following their results and guidance. On the other side of the ledger, Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), IT management solution provider CA Technologies (CA), UPS (UPS), and application delivery networking products maker F5 Networks (FFIV) were among the companies that fell after they reported their earnings or updated their financial outlooks... M&A reports moved a number of stocks this week. The Financial Post reported that Samsung (SSNLF) had hired investment bank Evercore (EVR) to evaluate a purchase of the troubled Canadian company. Samsung is still considering purchasing BlackBerry (BBRY), the newspaper added. However, Canada's BNN reported that Evercore said that Samsung has not been a recent client of theirs and that they prepare ideas "routinely" on their "own accord." Avon (AVP) has held talks about a potential sale to private equity firm TPG Capital, dealReporter stated. Bloomberg reported that online travel agency Orbitz Worldwide (OWW) is working with an adviser to contact potential buyers and has drawn interest from private-equity funds and other Internet companies... DreamWorks Animation (DWA) tumbled after announcing a new strategic plan that will see it cut its feature production from three films per year down to two and axe about 500 jobs. INDEXES: For the week, the Dow dipped 0.37% to 17,672.60, the Nasdaq rose 1.14% to 4,757.88, and the S&P gained 0.34% to 2,051.82.

Stifel increased its price target on Southwest after the company reported higher than expected Q4 EPS. The firm says that the company's results were solid, while its outlook is healthy. The firm expects the company to use its savings from lower fuel costs to increase its share repurchases and dividend. Stifel keeps a Buy rating on the shares.

U.S. airlines said they expect to obtain "enormous" savings in 2015 from the decline in oil prices, according to Reuters. The company said in a filing that it expects to record special charges of $226M, or $232M before income taxes, for Q4. he company recorded $141M of costs related primarily to a voluntary early-out program for its flight attendants. More than 2,500 participants elected a one-time opportunity to voluntarily separate from the company and will receive a severance payment, with a maximum value of $100,000 per participant, based on years of service, with retirement dates from Nov. 30, 2014 through the end of 2015. The company will record additional expense associated with this program through 2015 over the remaining required service periods. The company recorded a charge of $16M related to its annual assessment of impairment of its indefinite-lived intangible assets. On Oct. 10, 2014, United used cash to retire, at par, the entire $248M principal balance of the 6% Convertible Junior Subordinated Debentures and the 6% Convertible Preferred Securities, Term Income Deferrable Equity Securities. The $53M expense is primarily associated with the write off of non-cash debt discounts recorded on the TIDES due to purchase accounting during the merger with Continental Airlines in 2010.

JetBlue's preliminary completion factor was 99.5% and its on-time performance was 80.3%. JetBlue's preliminary passenger revenue per available seat mile for the month of December decreased 6% year over year. For the fourth quarter 2014, PRASM is expected to be relatively flat compared to last year.

Southwest announced that the company flew 9.2B revenue passenger miles in December 2014, a 2.8% increase from the 9B RPMs flown in December 2013. Available seat miles increased 2.9% to 11.2B from the December 2013 level of 10.8B . The December 2014 load factor was 82.7% compared with 82.8% in December 2013. For December 2014, passenger revenue per ASM is estimated to have decreased in the four to five percent range, as compared with December 2013. For the fourth quarter of 2014, the company flew 26.8B RPMs, compared with 25.7B RPMs flown for the same period in 2013, an increase of 4.3%. Fourth quarter 2014 ASMs increased 2.4% to 32.6B from fourth quarter 2013 ASMs of 31.9B . The fourth quarter 2014 load factor was 82%, compared with 80.4% for the same period in 2013. For fourth quarter 2014, PRASM is estimated to have increased in the one to two percent range, as compared with fourth quarter 2013.
