American Airlines (AAL), Delta Air Lines (DAL) and United Airlines (UAL) have complained that Etihad, Emirates and Qatar Airlines have an unfair advantage due to the $42B in government subsidies received over the last decade, reports the Los Angeles Times. The U.S. carriers have asked federal officials to renegotiate an Open Skies agreement, although a new congressional report says that the U.S. airline industry benefited from $155B in support from the U.S. government from 1918 to 1999. United Continental by the FAA was increased in February due to risks from repeated violations of mandatory pilot qualification and scheduling requirements, The Wall Street Journal reports. According to a February 6 letter from an FAA official to United, the FAA called for a "thorough overhaul of parts of United's process for qualifying crew members," and followed a safety warning to United pilots sent in January. The letter notes voluntary reports of 12 violations in 13 months stemming "from the same or similar set of circumstances" and indicate a "systemic" hazard, requiring United to complete a review of its processes for crew member qualification. Hawaiian Airlines, a subsidiary of Hawaiian Holdings, has announced its system-wide traffic statistics for the month of March. Systemwide, compared to the same month of last year, PAX rose 7% to 887,346, RPMs rose 7.9% to 1,171,257, ASMs rose 4.3% to 1,442,557 and LF grew 2.7 points to 81.2%.
