JetBlue (JBLU) CEO Dave Barger said he expects to have discussions with his board soon about whether to extend his employment beyond his current seven year tenure, but Barger is under pressure as JetBlue's stock has lagged peers and the company recently saw its COO and three VPs depart, reported The Wall Street Journal. American Airlines (AAL), Delta Air Lines (DAL) and United Airlines (UAL) have complained that Etihad, Emirates and Qatar Airlines have an unfair advantage due to the $42B in government subsidies received over the last decade, reports the Los Angeles Times. The U.S. carriers have asked federal officials to renegotiate an Open Skies agreement, although a new congressional report says that the U.S. airline industry benefited from $155B in support from the U.S. government from 1918 to 1999. The recent strengthening of the dollar resulted in higher than anticipated foreign exchange losses. As a result, the company now expects Q1 pretax margin excluding special charges to be approximately 12%-13%, down from its previous guidance of 12%-14%.

United Continental by the FAA was increased in February due to risks from repeated violations of mandatory pilot qualification and scheduling requirements, The Wall Street Journal reports. According to a February 6 letter from an FAA official to United, the FAA called for a "thorough overhaul of parts of United's process for qualifying crew members," and followed a safety warning to United pilots sent in January. The letter notes voluntary reports of 12 violations in 13 months stemming "from the same or similar set of circumstances" and indicate a "systemic" hazard, requiring United to complete a review of its processes for crew member qualification. American Airlines has received a single operating certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration for American and US Airways, marking a major milestone in the integration of the two airlines. The FAA's approval for American and US Airways to operate under one certificate is the culmination of more than 18 months of work aligning the carriers' operating policies and procedures. Beginning today, most flight operations, maintenance and dispatch procedures will be identical for all flights. Air traffic control communications will refer to all American and US Airways flights with the call sign "American."
