12:29 EDTISRGIntuitive Surgical lower after FDA discourages laparoscopic power morcellation
In a safety communication notice issued earlier, the Food and Drug Administration discouraged the use of laparoscopic power morcellation for hysterectomy, which is the removal of the uterus, or myomectomy, which is the removal of uterine fibroids in women. The FDA said that, based on an analysis of currently available data, laparoscopic power morcellation poses a risk of spreading unsuspected cancerous tissue, notably uterine sarcomas, beyond the uterus. Intuitive Surgical's da Vinci surgical system can be used with tissue morcellators in such surgical procedures. Shares of Intuitive Surgical, which have traded both above and below the flatline during today's session, are recently down 0.75% to trade near $412.
