As Intel's (INTC) convention nears, challenges from smartphones, tablets continue to grow vs the PC. Intel had already warned that its revenue this quarter would be about $1B less than it had been expecting, as demand for PCs is weakening, even among corporate users. Intel vaguely cited issues of global macroeconomic distress, but most Wall Street observers say there are two other reasons affecting the industry. One is uncertainty about demand for the next version of Microsoft's (MSFT) Windows, which ships on Oct. 26. The question is, if the more normal, predictable Windows 7 has failed to promote sustained growth for the PC industry, will the more complicated Windows 8 fare any better? The other problem is the advent of tablet computers, in particular Apple's (AAPL) iPad, and smartphones, both of which seem to be siphoning dollars away from PCs, though it's unclear how much. Intel's next family of PC microprocessors, code-named Haswell, is designed on consuming half the power of it's current laptop chips. When Haswell arrives next year, it should help system makers such as Samsung Electronics (SSNLF), Dell (DELL), Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) and Lenovo (LNVGY) to build more appealing mobile computers. But the challenge still rests with those companies to build a complete system that really makes people take notice of Windows 8 and buy new PCs vs. tablets. While there is a lot to worry about heading into the show, Ray contends that Intel is a value stock that requires some patience. Reference Link

After Bloomberg, citing "people familiar with the matter," said Google (GOOG) is considering a bid for map and traffic app maker Waze, TechCrunch countered that multiple credible sources it contacted "have poured cold water on the Google rumor." Facebook (FB) and Apple (AAPL) have previously been suggested as expressing interest in Waze, but the Bloomberg report said Apple was not among the "large tech companies” that have recently approached Waze, TechCrunch noted.
