12:53 EDTKNXCitigroup sees truck carrier stocks poised to outperform
With the U.S. economy growing quickly, the stocks of truck carriers are likely to outperform the S&P 500, Citigroup believes. WHAT'S NEW: Truck transportation prices and truck carrier stocks "respond most directly to economic growth," Citigroup analyst Christian Wetherbee wrote in a note to investors today. After carriers' truckload rates rose 4% last year, the rates should rise by a similar amount this year, Wetherbee predicted. Economic growth, along with the difficulties the carriers are experiencing with recruiting drivers, should be supportive of additional rate increases, the analyst stated. Wetherbee warned that the stocks of truck builders usually underperform during periods such as the current one, when a large amounts of U.S. class 8 trucks are being built. Consequently, truck carrier stocks present investors with an opportunity, while investors should be cautious on truck builders and parts suppliers, he wrote. Among truck carriers, Swift (SWFT) is particularly attractive, since it has underperformed its peers over the last year, Wetherbee stated. Additionally, the company's results appear likely to at least meet consensus estimates, the analyst predicted. He also kept a Buy rating on another truck carrier, Knight Transportation (KNX) and maintained a Buy rating on Cummins (CMI), which builds truck engines. The analyst kept a Hold rating on truck builder PACCAR (PCAR). OTHERS TO WATCH: Navistar (NAV) builds trucks and Celadon (CGI) is another truck carrier. PRICE ACTION: In early afternoon trading, Swift rose 1%, Knight Transportation gained 1.3%, Cummins added 0.7%, and PACCAR lost 0.5%.

The firm reiterates Buy ratings on Swift Transportation (SWFT) and Knight Transportation (KNX), with a preference for Swift. It also has a Buy rating on Cummins (CMI) and Neutral on PACCAR (PCAR).

08:59 EDTCSXCSX confirms response to West Virginia train derailment
CSX announced that teams were working with first responders on the derailment of an oil train near Mount Carbon, West Virginia. The train consisted of two locomotives and 109 rail cars and was traveling from North Dakota to Yorktown, Va. One person was being treated for potential inhalation, but no other injuries were reported. "At least one rail car appears to have ruptured and caught fire. The derailment has resulted in the precautionary evacuation of nearby communities, and precautionary suspension of operations at the Cedar Grove and Montgomery water treatment plants. CSX is working with the Red Cross and other relief organizations to address residentsí needs, taking into account winter storm conditions. These efforts include shelters for residents who have been evacuated. CSX teams also are working with first responders to address the fire, to determine how many rail cars derailed, and to deploy environmental protective measures and monitoring on land, air and in the nearby Kanawha River. The company also is working with public officials and investigative agencies to address their needs," the company said.

15:22 EDTCPCanadian Pacific enters binding arbitration with Teamsters Canada
Canadian Pacific said it and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference agreed to enter into binding arbitration, putting an end to the work stoppage by CP's locomotive engineers and conductors. E. Hunter Harrison, CP's CEO said, "While we would have preferred a negotiated settlement, this is the right thing to do at this time." An arbitrator will be appointed by the federal government. No further details are being released at this time. On February 14, CP announced a tentative four-year agreement with its Unifor employees. Details of the tentative agreement are being withheld pending ratification by the Unifor membership.

13:44 EDTCPCP disappointed by failed talks with Teamsters Canada Rail Conference
Canadian Pacific is disappointed to announce that negotiations with Teamsters Canada Rail Conference-Running Trades, TCRC, have broken down without an agreement. As a result, the TCRC have indicated they will strike as of 12:01 a.m. on February 15. TCRC represents CP's approximately 3,000 active locomotive engineers and conductors. CP proposed thoughtful, compelling and fair options including wage increases and improved benefit plans. Furthermore, CP proposed changes to work schedules to improve the quality of life for engineers and conductors. TCRC leadership claims that lack of time off is at the heart of its reluctance to negotiate, yet 72% of all engineers and conductors do not take the time off they are entitled to. Furthermore, 60% of the conductors and engineers at CP make between $80,000 and $160,000, while working an average of 31 to 35 hours a week. "We have wanted to make a deal for more than a year, and have been presenting the TCRC leadership with dynamic options and choices to improve the quality of life for employees while driving efficiencies in our business," said E. Hunter Harrison, CP's Chief Executive Officer. "Our conductors and engineers have plenty of options for time off, but the vast majority don't take full advantage of those opportunities. We want to implement a model that allows us to properly schedule crews while maintaining the highest standards of safe railroading" While CP would have preferred a negotiated settlement, at the urging of the Minister of Labour, the railroad agreed to immediate mediation and arbitration to avoid a work disruption. Unfortunately, the TCRC did not agree.
