05:34 EDTIBMIBM, DOST collaborate to build IOC for the Philippines
The Department of Science and Technology, or DOST, and IBM unveiled a new intelligent operations center to provide a central point of command for disaster management. The new center will help the Philippine government better manage ongoing and future disaster response and recovery efforts following Typhoon Yolanda in 2013. Immediately following the typhoon, IBM donated an Impact Grant of technology and services. As part of the grant, IBM, in collaboration with trusted business partners, delivered the IBM Intelligent Operations Center, or IOC, with an Integrated Communications System, or ICS, that will facilitate better and more coordinated disaster management efforts with the DOST and across various government agencies. The integrated solution will pull data from disparate sources into a common view, providing emergency managers with critical information such as advance warning for extreme weather events, feedback from first responders on the number of casualties and affected families, condition of buildings, roads, and infrastructure. These distributed data sources provide analytics and scenario planning to streamline and integrate the government's response to disasters. In addition, the solution will enable advanced communications for first responders and emergency personnel.

05:19 EDTIBMIBM announces collaboration with ARM Holdings
IBM (IBM) announced an expansion of its Internet of Things, or IoT, platform - called IBM IoT Foundation - through an integration with ARM (ARMH), providing out of the box connectivity with ARM mbed-enabled devices to analytics services. This fusion will allow huge quantities of data from devices such as industrial appliances, weather sensors and wearable monitoring devices to be gathered, analyzed and acted upon. IBM also announced the first in a series of IBM Cloud-based, industry-specific IoT services with IoT for Electronics. The service will enable electronics manufacturers to gather data from individual sensors that can be combined with other data for real-time analysis. The integration between IBM and ARM will allow products powered by ARM mbed-enabled chips to automatically register with the IBM IoT Foundation, and connect with IBM analytics services. This unifies the ARM mbed IoT Device Platform and the IBM IoT Foundation at the point where information gathered from deployed sensors in any connected device is delivered to the cloud for analysis. The IoT connection also enables delivery of actionable events to control equipment or provide users with alerts or other information. For example, the triggering of an alarm message on a washing machine to ask the owner to confirm a breakdown engineer appointment if a fault is detected.
