HSBC (HSBC) CEO Stuart Gulliver has pledged to retain his group’s private bank as a standalone division and will not go the way of rival Barclays’ (BCS), which combined its private banking operation into its retail division in May, said Financial Times. Reference Link

Barclays (BCS) has appointed Paul Compton as Group COO. Compton will join Barclays from JP Morgan Chase (JPM) in May into a newly configured role. He will join the Executive Committee of Barclays and report directly to the Group CEO Jes Staley. In this role, Compton will be responsible for Operations & Technology, Structural Reform, Cost Transformation, Major Project Delivery, Administration, Corporate Real Estate Services, and Sourcing. He will chair the Group Operating Committee.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced a $470M joint state-federal settlement with mortgage lender and servicer HSBC to address mortgage origination, servicing, and foreclosure abuses. The settlement provides direct payments to New York borrowers for past foreclosure abuses, loan modifications, and other relief for borrowers in need of assistance, rigorous mortgage servicing standards, and grants oversight authority to an independent monitor. It is estimated that New York State has nearly 136,000 HSBC loans, nearly 31% of HSBC's total portfolio. The settlement includes New York,48 other states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
