A whistleblower case unsealed in federal court in Philadelphia revealed that the Justice Department is investigating Health Management Associates on charges of allegedly paying kickbacks to physicians in exchange for referrals, reported The Wall Street Journal. Note that on December 26, Health Management Associates disclosed courts in Georgia and Florida unsealed dockets in four civil actions, publicly revealing four qui tam lawsuits filed by private individuals against the company and that the United States has elected to exercise its right to intervene in and litigate each of the four actions.
