06:59 EDTGOOGYahoo CEO comments on Microsoft search deal, Alibaba stake spinoff, WSJ says
Marissa Meyer, the CEO of Yahoo (YHOO), says that the company's restructured search partnership with Microsoft (MSFT) is designed to "put more pressure on Microsoft to make the product better" and ultimately both companies will get better and challenge Google (GOOG), The Wall Street Journal reports, citing comments made in a meeting with WSJ editors. 06:08 EDTGOOGEuropean Commission launches e-commerce sector inquiry
The European Commission has launched an antitrust competition inquiry into the e-commerce sector in the European Union. The inquiry, as announced by Commissioner Vestager in March, will allow the Commission to identify possible competition concerns affecting European e-commerce markets. It complements actions launched within the framework of the Digital Single Market Strategy adopted today. The sector inquiry will focus particularly on potential barriers erected by companies to cross-border online trade in goods and services where e-commerce is most widespread such as electronics, clothing and shoes, as well as digital content. Knowledge gained through the sector inquiry will contribute to better enforcement of competition law in the e-commerce sector. the Commission's competition sector inquiry will gather market information in order to better understand the nature, prevalence and effects of these and similar barriers erected by companies, and to assess them in light of EU antitrust rules. If, after analyzing the results, the Commission identified specific competition concerns, it could open case investigations to ensure compliance with EU rules on restrictive business practices and abuse of dominant market positions. In the coming weeks, the Commission will send requests for information to a range of stakeholders throughout the EU. The companies concerned may include, for example, manufacturers and wholesalers as well as e-commerce retailers. Under EU antitrust rules the Commission can require companies and trade associations to supply information, documents or statements as part of a sector inquiry. The Commission expects to publish a preliminary report for consultation in mid-2016. The final report is expected in the first quarter of 2017.

14:08 EDTGOOGGoogle acquires Timeful, terms undisclosed
Google said the following on its Official Gmail Blog: "With the proliferation of mobile phones and greater access to technology, it should be easy to get things done quickly and effortlessly. That’s why with tools like Gmail, Inbox, Calendar and Docs, we’ve built smart features to help you organize your life and take the work out of work—Inbox makes it easy to get started on your to-do list, Calendar automatically adds events from your Gmail, and Search gives you simple, concise answers about information that’s important to you. But even as these tools have simplified our lives, we’re still inundated with too many updates, information and everyday tasks. And we still have to do a lot of logistical work ourselves—like deciding to what time exactly we should snooze that Reminder in order to get it done in time for Mom’s birthday, or figuring out when to work on that presentation so that it’s ready for next week’s sales pitch. Today we’re excited to announce that Timeful is joining the Google family to help make getting things done in your life even easier." Reference Link

19:29 EDTGOOGGoogle sees increased viewership, ad views at YouTube
On its Q1 earnings call, Google CFO Patrick Pichette said, "Over the past year we've seen YouTube viewership climb dramatically, both in established markets but also due to rapid expansion in emerging markets. And quality improvements in TrueView ads mean that more users are, in fact, choosing not to skip them, increasing the overall ad view. So, this means that there is much higher volume of TrueView ads being seen, which has been a significant driver of year-over-year growth in numbers that you seeing inside clicks... Viewership in YouTube videos and TrueView ads are growing significantly, and YouTube's contribution to our advertising revenue continues to grow at a strong rate year-over-year." During the Q&A portion of the call, Pichette added, "In the last quarter, we've just seen a real acceleration at YouTube and that's why we thought it was important because we saw this change, from the fundamental kind of strong performance of YouTube." In after-hours trading, Google is up more than 3% to $564.00.

13:38 EDTGOOGGoogle to offer basic wireless service for $20 per month
Google says, "We offer one simple plan at one price with 24/7 support. Here's how it works: for $20 a month you get all the basics, and then it's a flat $10 per GB for cellular data while in the U.S. and abroad. 1GB is $10/month, 2GB is $20/month, 3GB is $30/month, and so on. Since it's hard to predict your data usage, you'll get credit for the full value of your unused data. Let's say you go with 3GB for $30 and only use 1.4GB one month. You'll get $16 back, so you only pay for what you use."
