10:56 EDTGOOG, RAX, AMZNGoogle reduces prices for infrastructure cloud offering
Google (GOOG) announced that it was cutting prices for its infrastructure-as-a-service cloud offering for businesses. WHAT'S NEW: The search giant cut its basic cloud engine fees by 10%, and reduced its disk storage fees by 60%. It also announced that the service would be taken out of "beta" and generally available, with 24/7 support and a guarantee that the service would be available 99.95% of the time. ANALYST REACTION: In a note to investors, Wells Fargo analyst Gray Powell wrote that computing makes up 75% or more of most cloud customers' bills, and a 10% price reduction for cloud computing is "somewhat normal." Google's announcement will not change the situation in the infrastructure-as-a-service space, added Powell. However, shares of another company in the space, Rackspace (RAX), are likely to remain under pressure, the analyst believes. For investors to embrace Rackspace again, the company will have to report that its business grew sequentially in the fourth quarter, wrote the analyst. Nonetheless, he kept an Outperform rating on the shares. Meanwhile, Robert W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian wrote that Google is becoming more competitive with Amazon (AMZN) in the cloud space. Moreover, Google is positioned to become the next large player in cloud services, added Sebastian, who kept an Outperform rating and raised his price target for Google shares to $1,175. PRICE ACTION: In mid-morning trading, Rackspace fell 7% to $34.90, while Google added 0.7% to $1,062.
