A study released by Forrester Research suggests that U.S. smartphone users in late 2014 spent roughly 12% of their time in Google (GOOG) apps, just below the 13% spent on Facebook (FB) apps, the Wall Street Journal reports. The time spent on Google apps is likely to be “much higher” since respondents were only asked to list apps they downloaded and the time spent on them, excluding apps pre-loaded on certain Google phones, the report says. The same is true of Apple’s (AAPL) apps, amounting to 3% of users time, the report says. Reference Link

GE announced that Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation Europe, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation has made an agreed offer to acquire GE’s European Sponsor Finance business for approximately $2.2B. GE Capital will retain its $1B investment in the European Senior Secured Loan Programme and European Loan Programme, both joint ventures between affiliates of GE Capital and affiliates of Ares Capital. When completed, the portfolio, which represents about $2.2B of ENI, will contribute approximately $400M of capital to the overall target of approximately $35B of dividends expected to GE under this plan. The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approval. It is expected to close in the third quarter of 2015. Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Citigroup Global Markets provided financial advice to GE and Clifford Chance provided legal advice. Since the April 10 announcement, GE has signed agreements to sell about $23B, including the European Sponsor Finance deal announced today with ENI of $2.2B. Other sales during the quarter include $1.2B of loans in our UK Home Lending portfolio, plus the previously announced $8.6B global Fleet Services business and the approximately $11B U.S. Sponsor Finance business. In addition, during the quarter, the sale of GE Capital’s Budapest Bank to the Hungarian State closed on June 29 and GE Capital Real Estate closed, in total, approximately $15B of previously announced sales.

05:59 EDTAAPLGartner: Worldwide IT spending on pace to decline 5.5% in 2015
Worldwide IT spending is on pace to total $3.5T in 2015, a 5.5% decline from 2014, according to the latest forecast by Gartner, Inc. Analysts attribute the decline to the rising U.S. dollar. In constant-currency terms, the market is projected to grow 2.5%. In Gartner's previous forecast in April, it had forecast IT spending to decline 1.3% in U.S. dollars and grow 3.1% in constant currency. "We want to stress that this is not a market crash. Such are the illusions that large swings in the value of the U.S. dollar versus other currencies can create," said John-David Lovelock, research vice president at Gartner. "However, there are secondary effects to the rising U.S. dollar. Vendors do have to raise prices to protect costs and margins of their products, and enterprises and consumers will have to make new purchase decisions in light of the new prices." Communications services will continue to be the largest IT spending segment in 2015 with spending at nearly $1.5T. However, this segment is also experiencing the strongest decline among the five IT sectors. In the device market, mobile phones continue to be the leading segment, with growth in Apple phones, especially in China, keeping overall phone spending consistent. However, overall smartphone unit growth will start to flatten. The PC and tablet market continues to weaken. The expected 10 percent increase in average PC pricing in currency-impacted countries is going ahead, delaying purchases even more than expected. Excessive PC inventory levels, especially in Western Europe, need to be cleared, which will delay Windows 10 inventory in the second half of the year. Within the data center systems segment, storage and network markets are both expected to see weaker growth in U.S. dollar terms as a result of the appreciation of the U.S. dollar. Reference Link

05:21 EDTGEGE to sell majority of fleet businesses to Element Financial for $6.9B
GE announced that it has reached an agreement to sell its U.S., Mexico, Australia and New Zealand fleet businesses to Element Financial for $6.9B. Separately, GE has signed a memorandum of understanding for the potential sale of its European fleet businesses to Arval, a fully owned subsidiary of BNP Paribas. Arval and GE will now consult with their respective works councils. The transactions’ completion will also be subject to customary regulatory and other local corporate or antitrust approvals. Both transactions represent an aggregate of about $8.6B of ending net investment, approximately $6.0B to Element and about $2.6B to Arval. This brings GE Capital’s total announced sales to about $63B to date. GE is on track to execute sales of $100B by the end of 2015. The transactions would, if completed, contribute approximately $1.8B of capital to the overall target of approximately $35B of dividends expected to GE under this plan. The U.S. and Mexico transaction is expected to close in Q3, and the A&NZ transaction in Q4, subject to customary regulatory and other approvals. Our mission is to collaborate with journalists and entrepreneurs to help build the future of media. And we’re tackling this in three ways: though ensuring our tools are made available to journalists around the world -- and that newsrooms know how to use them; by getting helpful Google data sets in the hands of journalists everywhere; and through programs designed to build on some of the biggest opportunities that exist in the media industry today. 11:09 EDTUALDelta climbs following upgrade, reported fare hike
The shares of Delta Air Lines (DAL) are rising after research firm Wolfe Research upgraded the stock to Outperform from Peer Perform in a note to investors earlier today. Additionally, JPMorgan says Delta appears to have instituted a domestic fare increase yesterday. WHAT'S NEW: Delta's new deal with its pilots on profit sharing removes an unknown that had been facing the company, Wolfe wrote. Additionally, the airlines seems to be implementing additional domestic capacity cuts, the firm stated. As a result, Wolfe slightly increased its passenger revenue per available seat mile, or PRASM, estimate for the company. Furthermore, expectations for Delta's Q3 PRASM have dropped significantly, even though the airlines recently said that its PRASM should turn positive in Q4. Consensus estimates for Delta now look "reasonable" for this year and beatable in 2016, according to Wolfe, which set a $62 price target on the shares. WHAT'S NOTABLE: JPMorgan said Delta appears to have instituted an additional, $2 one-way across-the-board domestic fare increase yesterday, following last week's industry-wide increase. The firm sees "no harm" in Delta trying, but adds it would be surprised to see material support from the discounters. JPMorgan said it remains "puzzled" as to why airline industry stock sentiment is so negative since discipline among the companies is "alive and kicking." The firm has an Overweight rating on Delta. OTHERS TO WATCH: Other publicly traded airline operators include American Airlines (AAL), JetBlue (JBLU), Southwest (LUV) and United Continental (UAL). PRICE ACTIOn: In late morning trading, Delta rose 2.5% to $42.38.

10:21 EDTUALSouthwest, Spirit retreat after analysts downgrade shares
Southwest Airlines (LUV) and Spirit Airlines (SAVE) are falling after both airline stocks received downgrades from research firms this morning. Barclays downgraded Southwest, while Credit Suisse cut its rating on Spirit. WHAT'S NEW: Barclays analyst David Fintzen lowered his rating on Southwest to Underweight from Overweight, saying that the stock's valuation is above peer levels even though its outlook is no better than its large competitors. Moreover, the company's margins could drop in 2016 because of its "outsized growth," the analyst warned. Credit Suisse analyst Julie Yates downgraded Spirit Airlines to Neutral from Outperform, as she believes the airlines is facing more aggressive competitor fares. American Airlines (AAL) is offering lower fares than Spirit on five of the latter company's ten top ten routes for travel two months from reservation dates, the analyst stated. Moreover, Spirit's second quarter margins may come in below its guidance and the airline will probably reduce its margin outlook when its reports its Q2 results in late July, Yates predicted. WHAT'S NOTABLE: Barclays' Fintzen was more upbeat on Spirit, continuing to identify it as his top pick among airlines. More broadly, Fintzen remains generally upbeat on airline stocks, predicting that the industry's profitability will be "far more durable" than the market believes. The sector's competition is balanced, and it has increased its capacity and airplane purchases much less than in prior periods of oil price declines, according to Fintzen. Additionally, the airline stocks' multiples remain overly depressed, he believes. He says that the following stock in the sector can climb about 50%: Spirit, American, Delta (DAL), and United (UAL). PRICE ACTION: In early trading, Southwest dropped 2.2% to $33.11 and Spirit slid 2.4% to $60.91.

08:22 EDTAAPLApple iPhone demand holding up better than expected, says Pacific Crest
Pacific Crest says its initial estimates of iPhone component orders for the September quarter indicate that iPhone demand should hold up better than it had previously expected. The firm adds that iPhone demand appears to have remained solid in recent months, which should enable Apple's Q3 EPS to beat expectations. Pacific Crest adds that its more upbeat view on the iPhone is "somewhat offset" by its less positive outlook on Apple Watch sales. Nevertheless the firm thinks that the iPhone's improved outlook reduces the stock's downside risk. However, it keeps a Sector Weight rating on the shares.

07:51 EDTGOOGTwitter downgraded to Neutral at MKM Partners on stalled user growth
As previously reported, MKM Partners analyst Rob Sanderson downgraded Twitter (TWTR) to Neutral from Buy, noting that growth in its user base is stalling out and he sees no catalyst for sentiment to improve in the next two quarters, besides a possible bid from Google (GOOG). Sanderson thinks the company's CEO search brings with it some uncertainty and likely delays user experience improvements, unless Jack Dorsey takes over full-time, but that would require him to give up his CEO post at Square. The firm lowered its estimates on Twitter and cut its price target on the shares to $39 from $57.
