06:23 EDTGOOG, NTDOY, AAPL, SNEIDC: Gamers spent four times as much on Google Play games in Q4 vs. year ago
International Data Corporation and App Annie yesterday released a new report, Portable Gaming Spotlight: 2013 Review, which summarizes several key portable gaming statistics and trends in four global regions for 2013. Among other findings, the report shows that gamers spent more than four times as much money on Google Play (GOOG) smartphone and tablet games in the fourth quarter of 2013 as they did in the final quarter of 2012. Worldwide spending on iOS App Store (AAPL) games more than doubled over the same period, and iOS game revenue continues to lead Google Play game revenue by a wide margin. Packaged and full-game digital spending on gaming-optimized handheld platforms, typified by Nintendo's (NTDOY) 3DS and Sony's (SNE) PlayStation Vita, meanwhile, rose approximately 9% between 4Q12 and 4Q13. Quarterly gaming-optimized handheld game revenue narrowly exceeded that of Google Play in 4Q13. iOS App Store spending on games finished first overall for 4Q13 and for 2013 as a whole.

07:38 EDTGOOGFollow-up: Google downgraded at BofA/Merrill
As previously reported, BofA/Merrill downgraded Google to Neutral from Buy. The firm lowered estimates slightly below the Street due to lack of product catalysts, search maturity, and margin pressure from investments. BofA/Merrill is also cautious on online advertising growth given increased regulatory risk in the EU, potential Facebook (FB) competition, share loss from social growth, and a strong Apple (AAPL) product cycle. Price target lowered to $580 from $600.
