15:09 EDTAAPLEarnings Watch: Apple reports with iPhone sales, capital return in focus
Apple (AAPL) is set to report second quarter earnings after the market close on Monday, April 27, with a conference call scheduled for 5:00 pm ET. Apple, the world's most valuable company by market capitalization, is the manufacturer of the iPhone and iPad, among other desktop and mobile computing devices. EXPECTATIONS: Analysts are looking for earnings per share of $2.16 on revenue of $56.06B, according to First Call. The consensus range for EPS is $1.89-$2.43 on revenue of $51.37B-$59.46B. Along with its last earnings report, Apple said it sees Q2 revenue of $52B-$55B and a gross margin between 38.5%-39.5%. In a note to investors, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said he believes Apple will report revenue, excluding foreign exchange impacts, in line with Street estimates of $56B, implying 57M iPhones. Munster added that he believes the Street is currently looking for 42.7M iPhones in the company's June report, 45.1M in September, and 73.4M in December. LAST QUARTER: Apple reported first quarter EPS of $3.06, which topped the consensus estimate for $2.60. First quarter revenue of $74.6B also beat the $67.69B consensus expectation. Apple reported it sold 74.5M iPhones, 21.42M iPads and 5.52M Macs in Q1. Apple reported a Q1 gross margin of 39.9%, versus 37.9% in the same quarter of last year. NEWS: On February 11, Carl Icahn stated that he has gained further confidence in his thesis on the company, increasing the forecasted EPS for FY 2015 in his model from $9.60 to $9.70. Ichan noted then that he believed the market "should value Apple at $216 per share." A few days later, Financial Times reported Apple had been recruiting automotive technology and vehicle design experts who are at work in a confidential Silicon Valley location near the company’s Cupertino campus and The Wall Street Journal said the company was working secretly toward creating an Apple-branded electric vehicle. On March 6, S&P Dow Jones Indices announced Apple had been selected to replace AT&T (T) in the Dow Jones Industrial Average after the close of trading on Wednesday, March 18. On March 9, Apple announced that Apple Watch would be available on Friday, April 24 to customers in Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, the U.K. and the U.S. In addition to unveiling the Watch that day, Apple also announced a lower price tag of $69 for Apple TV, debuted the thinner new edition of its MacBook and Time Warner's (TWX) HBO announced HBO NOW was coming to Apple TV, making an HBO subscription available directly to Apple customers for the first time. ANALYST OPINION: On the day after Apple's last earnings report, a number of analysts hiked their price targets for the stock, with Cantor increasing its price target to what was then a "Street high" $160 from $143. In a note to investors on March 23, Cantor analyst Brian White then raised his price target on Apple to $180 from $160. At $180 per share, the company's total valuation would be about $1 trillion, the analyst stated. The streaming TV offering it will reportedly launch could be a stepping stone into making actual TVs, according to White, who noted that the LCD TV market is worth $100B a year. Additionally, given the 4G expansion in China, as well as the larger iPhones and Apple's relationship with China Mobile (CHL), Apple is better positioned than ever in China, according to the analyst. The reviews of the Apple Watch suggest that the product will be far short of "insanely great," Raymond James analyst Tavis McCourt wrote in a note to investors on April 10. The lukewarm reviews could raise doubts in investors' minds about the company's ability to launch successful new products and iPhone unit sales are likely to drop in fiscal 2016 versus fiscal 2015, McCourt contended. Against this backdrop, Apple's stock is likely to remain range-bound, wrote McCourt, who downgraded the stock to Market Perform from Outperform. Last April, Apple increased its share repurchase to $90B from $60B and increased its dividend by 8% to $11B annually, Piper's Munster has pointed out. This year, the firm believes "the bogey" for investors is a 15% increase to Apple's total reported capital return number, share repurchase plus past dividends, which would imply a $150B headline number, up from the $130B announced last year. Piper, however, estimates the most likely range for Apple's new capital return policy will fall between $170B and $180B. It keeps an Overweight rating on the stock with a $160 price target. This morning, Brean Capital analyst Ananda Baruah initiated shares of Apple with a Buy rating and $160 price target ahead of the company's March quarter report. Baruah told investors that consensus estimates for the iPhone maker are "materially low" though 2017. The analyst sees upside through 2017 from iPhone shipments and favorable gross margin due to greater than expected sales of the more profitable 6 Plus. PRICE ACTION: Shares of Apple advanced 5.65% on the first day of trade following its Q1 report. Over the last three months, shares of Apple are up more than 20%. In afternoon trading ahead of its Q2 report, Apple is up 1% to $131.58 per share.

19:29 EDTGOOGGoogle sees increased viewership, ad views at YouTube
On its Q1 earnings call, Google CFO Patrick Pichette said, "Over the past year we've seen YouTube viewership climb dramatically, both in established markets but also due to rapid expansion in emerging markets. And quality improvements in TrueView ads mean that more users are, in fact, choosing not to skip them, increasing the overall ad view. So, this means that there is much higher volume of TrueView ads being seen, which has been a significant driver of year-over-year growth in numbers that you seeing inside clicks... Viewership in YouTube videos and TrueView ads are growing significantly, and YouTube's contribution to our advertising revenue continues to grow at a strong rate year-over-year." During the Q&A portion of the call, Pichette added, "In the last quarter, we've just seen a real acceleration at YouTube and that's why we thought it was important because we saw this change, from the fundamental kind of strong performance of YouTube." 13:12 EDTAMZNEarnings Watch: Analysts mixed on Amazon ahead of Q1 report
Amazon.com (AMZN) is expected to report first quarter earnings after the market close on Thursday, April 23 with a conference call scheduled for 5:30 pm ET. Amazon.com is an online retail company that also provides consumer electronics and cloud computing services. EXPECTATIONS: Analysts are looking for earnings per share of (13c) on revenue of $22.39B. The consensus range is (56c)-35c for EPS, and $21.74B-$22.88B for revenue, according to First Call. LAST QUARTER: Amazon.com reported fourth quarter EPS of 45c against estimates of 17c, on revenue of $29.33B against estimates of $29.67B. The company gave Q1 revenue guidance of $20.9B-$22.9B and Q1 operating income guidance of ($450M)-$50M, compared to $146M in the year-ago period. Amazon also reported worldwide paid Prime memberships increased 53% in 2014. NEWS AND STREET RESEARCH: During Amazon’s Q4 earnings conference call, CFO Thomas Szkutak said the company will look to invest in China and India. In the past quarter, an Economics Times report said the company was planning to create its own fashion and lifestyle private brands in India. RBC Capital says the company’s outlook is still positive due to significant opportunity for growth in India. UBS noted that Amazon could benefit from restructuring its China operations, making a case for Amazon to exit the country as it faces stiff competition from Alibaba (BABA) and Jd.com (JD). Amazon.com expanded its two-hour delivery program to Brooklyn, Baltimore, Miami, Austin and Atlanta. Piper Jaffray said the expansion of the program is "encouraging" and will prevent retailers from gaining mindshare from Amazon. The company announced the launch of its Amazon Giveaway tool, AWS Marketplace, new Fire TV features and greenlit five new Amazon Original series, but it plans to shut down Amazon Webstore. ChannelAdvisor said Amazon SSS was up 27% in January, 22.7% in February and 24.6% in March. In recommendations, the company’s price target was raised RW Baird after the firm assigned a standalone value of $40B-$45B to Amazon Web Services. Its price target was also raised at Citigroup due the company’s upcoming disclosure of new segment metrics. Earlier this month, Cleveland Research said its checks indicate Amazon has in-line sales growth and margin expansion that will lead to modest upside Q1 CSOI. Jefferies adds that the company’s fulfillment strategy will drive revenue growth acceleration in the medium to longer-term margin improvement with scale. Baird also said that its Amazon.com survey suggests accelerating growth trends in product selection and Prime-eligible units. Piper Jaffray said it is positive on Amazon shares because the firm believes margins will exceed expectations for the next two quarters. Ahead of the company’s Q1 earnings report, Amazon was upgraded at Monness Crespi citing a the release of results for Amazon’s Web Service segment. The firm called it a "catalytic event" outside of the company’s "standard beat-and-raise" type of report. Amazon was downgraded, however, at BGC Financial due to the negative impact of currency. BGC added that it expects the company to "sustain its investment cycle regardless of overall profitability." PRICE ACTION: Amazon.com shares have increased over 24% over the last three months. In Thursday trading ahead of the Q1 report, Amazon.com shares are down 0.35%.

Google says, "We offer one simple plan at one price with 24/7 support. Here's how it works: for $20 a month you get all the basics, and then it's a flat $10 per GB for cellular data while in the U.S. and abroad. 1GB is $10/month, 2GB is $20/month, 3GB is $30/month, and so on. Since it's hard to predict your data usage, you'll get credit for the full value of your unused data. Let's say you go with 3GB for $30 and only use 1.4GB one month. You'll get $16 back, so you only pay for what you use."

ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., the Empire State manufacturing report had a reading of -1.19, versus expectations for a 7.17 reading. Industrial production fell 0.6% in March, versus expectations for a 0.3% decline. Capacity utilization came in at 78.4% during the month, versus the 78.6% that was forecast. NAHB's homebuilder confidence index climbed to 56 in April, versus expectations for a reading of 55. The Federal Reserve is scheduled to release its Beige Book at 2 pm EDT this afternoon. In China, the nation's GDP grew at a 7.0% rate in Q1, which met expectations but was the lowest level of quarterly growth since 2009. A number of March data releases came in below expectations in China, including reports on industrial production, retail sales and fixed investments. In Europe, the European Central Bank kept interest rates unchanged. COMPANY NEWS: The European Commission announced it has opened a formal investigation of whether Google’s (GOOG, GOOGL) conduct in relation to its Android mobile operating system as well as applications and services for smartphones and tablets has breached EU antitrust rules. The Commission also sent a Statement of objections to Google alleging the company has abused its dominant position in the markets for general internet search services in the European Economic Area by favoring its own comparison shopping product in its general search results pages. For its part, Google's SVP of Google Search Amit Singhal said the company "respectfully but strongly" disagrees with the need to issue a statement of objections and looks forward to making its case... After Intel (INTC) reported results that were in-line with its preannouncement and estimated that its 2015 revenue would be roughly flat year-over-year, shares rose 4.5%. However, analysts disagreed on the company's ability to meet its revised outlook, with Wedbush upgrading the stock to Outperform from Neutral, but Citi saying that the company's guidance was too bullish and keeping a Neutral rating on the shares. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Celsion (CLSN), which gained 20% after the company announced interim data from its ongoing open-label Phase 2 DIGNITY Trial of ThermoDox in recurrent chest wall breast cancer. Also higher was gunmaker Smith & Wesson (SWHC), which gained 13% after raising its guidance, citing orders throughout its fiscal fourth quarter that have been stronger than originally anticipated. Among the noteworthy losers was Alcatel-Lucent (ALU), which dropped 19% after agreeing to merge with Nokia (NOK) in an all-share transaction that values Alcatel-Lucent at EUR 15.6B on a fully diluted basis. Also lower were shares of Precision Castparts (PCP), which fell 3% after the company issued fourth quarter guidance, said it was making headcount reductions and the stock was downgraded at DA Davidson. INDEXES: Near midday, the Dow was up 56.39, or 0.31%, to 18,093.09, the Nasdaq was up 24.52, or 0.49%, to 5,001.81, and the S&P 500 was up 9.80, or 0.47%, to 2,105.64.
10:48 EDTGOOGGoogle 'strongly' disagrees with EU Statement of Objections
In a blog post from earlier, Google's SVP of Google Search Amit Singhal said, in part: "We’ve seen similar allegations of harm from competitors in other areas. And the European Commission today confirmed that it is sending Google a Statement of Objections,SO, regarding the display and ranking of shopping results...While Google may be the most used search engine, people can now find and access information in numerous different ways -- and allegations of harm, for consumers and competitors, have proved to be wide of the mark. Any economist would say that you typically do not see a ton of innovation, new entrants or investment in sectors where competition is stagnating -- or dominated by one player. Yet that is exactly what’s happening in our world. Zalando, the German shopping site, went public in 2014 in one of Europe’s biggest-ever tech IPOs. Companies like Facebook, Pinterest and Amazon have been investing in their own search services and search engines like Quixey, DuckDuckGo and Qwant have attracted new funding. We’re seeing innovation in voice search and the rise of search assistants -- with even more to come. It’s why we respectfully but strongly disagree with the need to issue a Statement of Objections and look forward to making our case over the weeks ahead." Reference Link

16:53 EDTNOKOn The Fly: Top stock stories for Tuesday
Stocks on Wall Street were mixed for the day, beginning the session in positive territory helped by better than expected earnings reports from JPMorgan (JPM), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), and Wells Fargo (WFC). The early economic data was slightly below Wall Street expectations and became a headwind for the market. By the end of the first hour of trading the market had turned negative, and it spent the remainder of the day trading in mixed fashion. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., retail purchases for March advanced 0.9%, bouncing up from a 0.5% decline in February. However, economists had predicted a 1.1% growth after improvements on last month's weather. The producer price index grew 0.2% for March, in line with consensus estimates. Core PPI grew 0.2% versus expectations of 0.1% growth. The International Monetary Fund's World Economic Outlook Report trimmed U.S. growth forecast to 3.1% from its previous outlook of 3.6%, while global forecast was left unchanged at 3.5%. COMPANY NEWS: Avon (AVP) surged 66c, or 8.24%, to $8.67 following a Wall Street Journal report that the company is exploring strategic alternatives, including potentially selling its North American business, though a Bloomberg report later in the day claimed the company is not conducting a formal sale process... Nokia (NOK) confirmed it is in "advanced discussions" to buy French telecom firm Alcatel-Lucent (ALU), prompting French President Francois Hollande to schedule meetings with leaders from both companies. Later in the day, the French government announced it supports the potential deal, with French Economy Minister Emmanuel Macron stating Nokia reassured officials by detailing "clear undertakings." Nokia fell 34c, or 4.1%, to $7.96 at the close, while Alcatel jumped 58c, or 13.33%, to $4.93. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was 58.com (WUBA), which rallied 33.52%, or $17.04, to $67.87 after the Financial Times reported the company has signed a memorandum of understanding to merge with rival classifieds service Ganji.com. Also higher was PartnerRe (PRE), which advanced 8.49% to $129.25 after EXOR proposed to acquire the company for $130.00 per share in cash, valuing PartnerRe at $6.4B. Following earnings, JPMorgan (JPM) advanced 1.56% to $63.04 after beating expectations, while Wells Fargo (WFC) fell 0.73% and Johnson & Johnson fell 0.03% after reducing its FY15 earnings guidance. Among the noteworthy losers was Arrowhead Research (ARWR), which tumbled 7.75% after Jefferies downgraded the stock to Hold and lowered its price target to $9 from $30. The firm said that while ARC-520 offers the potential for a Hepatitis B virus functional cure, it prefers to wait for multi-dosing data. Also lower was Norfolk Southern (NSC), which dropped 4.18% to $100.49 and was downgraded to Hold at TD Securities following first quarter guidance that fell below expectations. INDEXES: The Dow rose 59.66, or 0.33%, to 18,036.70, the Nasdaq lost 10.96, or 0.22%%, to 4,977.29, and the S&P 500 advanced 3.41, or 0.16%, to 2,095.84.

12:24 EDTNOKOn The Fly: Top stock stories at midday
Stocks on Wall Street were mixed at midday despite better than expected headline earnings from JPMorgan (JPM), Wells Fargo (WFC) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ). The market began the session in positive territory on the heels of those solid earnings reports, but the averages were unable to hold their early gains as the retail sales figures released during the pre-market trading session missed expectations. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., retail purchases grew 0.9% in March, rebounding from a 0.5% decline in February. However, economists were expecting a more pronounced 1.1% advance in recovery from the prior month's weather driven weakness. The producer price index rose 0.2% in March, matching expectations. The core PPI, which excludes food and energy, grew 0.2% as well, versus expectations for it to have risen 0.1%. Business Inventories grew 0.3% in February, versus expectations for them to be up 0.2%. The International Monetary Fund, in its latest World Economic Outlook Report, trimmed its U.S. growth forecast to a 3.1% pace from its prior 3.6% view, but left its global forecast intact at a 3.5% rate. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of JPMorgan advanced 1.5% after its headline earnings per share topped expectations, even before accounting for 13c per share in aftertax legal expense that the bank identified as a "significant item." Conversely, fellow large bank Wells Fargo (WFC) slid 1.5% after its own report on first quarter results, despite the fact that its earnings and revenue both topped the consensus forecast... Shares of Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) were fractionally higher at midday after its first quarter earnings and revenue beat expectations. The multinational company, however, lowered its FY15 adjusted earnings outlook, citing further negative foreign currency movements... Nokia (NOK) and Alcatel-Lucent (ALU), in response to "recent media speculation," confirmed that they are in advanced discussions with respect to a potential full combination, which would take the form of a public exchange offer by Nokia for Alcatel. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was 58.com (WUBA), which jumped 25% after Financial Times reported the company has signed a memorandum of understanding to merge with peer Ganji.com to create one of the largest specialized online classified companies in China. Also higher was PartnerRe (PRE), which advanced nearly 9% to trade near $129.50 after Europe based investment company EXOR announced that it submitted a written proposal to acquire 100% of the common shares of the company for $130.00 per share in cash, valuing PartnerRe at $6.4B. EXOR said its all-cash proposal represents a 16% premium to the implied value per share of $112.53 for PartnerRe under the merger deal it has in place with AXIS Capital (AXS). Among the noteworthy losers was Arrowhead Research (ARWR), which tumbled over 6% after Jefferies downgraded the stock to Hold and cut its price target for shares to $9 from $30 after assuming coverage of the stock. The firm said that while ARC-520 offers the potential for a Hepatitis B virus functional cure, it prefers to wait for multi-dosing data. Also lower was Norfolk Southern (NSC), which fell nearly 6% and was downgraded to Hold from Buy at TD Securities after the railroad operator provided first quarter guidance that came in below analysts' consensus estimates. INDEXES: Near midday, the Dow was up 53.15, or 0.3%, to 18,030.19, the Nasdaq was down 16.19, or 0.32%, to 4,972.06, and the S&P 500 was up 2.20, or 0.11%, to 2,094.63.
