09:45 EDTAAPL, GOOG, MSFTStrategy Analytics: Android captured 70% share of smartphone shipments in 2013
According to the latest research from SA's Wireless Smartphone Strategies service, global smartphone shipments grew 41% annually to reach a record 990M units in 2013. Android (GOOG) captured 79% share of all smartphones shipped worldwide and extended its lead over Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT) and other rivals. Global smartphone shipments grew 34% annually from 217M units in Q4 2012 to 290.2M in Q4 2013. Global smartphone shipments for the full year were just shy of the 1B level, but they nonetheless reached a record 990M units in 2013, increasing from 700.1M in 2012. Android shipped a record 781.2M smartphones worldwide for 79% marketshare in 2013. Apple iOS grew a sluggish 13% annually and shipped 153.4M smartphones worldwide for 15% marketshare during 2013. Microsoft is now firmly established as the smartphone industry’s third major ecosystem, shipping 35.7M units worldwide to capture 4% marketshare in 2013. However, the Windows Phone platform is still struggling to gain traction in the low-tier and premium-tier smartphone categories and they remain serious weaknesses that Microsoft will need to address in 2014. 05:55 EDTAAPL, GOOGApple has small team working on augmented reality, says Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster says that following talks with industry contacts, he believes Apple (AAPL) has a small team working and exploring the augmented reality space. Munster believes augmented reality has the potential to "be as profound a technology platform as the smartphone today," but admits broader consumer adoption is likely 10 years away. He views Apple's involvement in the space as an indication the company is preparing for the next evolution of computing. Munster has an Overweight rating on Apple with a $160 price target. He describes augmented reality as the "overlay of digital information on the physical world," with Google (GOOG) Glass given as an example.
