| theflyonthewall.com: | Gates’ ECF Value Fund likes Nortek, Floteck, Copart, Dover Downs, Barron’s says | | Jeff Gates' ECF Value Fund tries to find companies whose cash flows are understandable and where there may be some problems. His event-driven fund, ECF Value, has delivered average annualized gains of 17.5% a year since its 1996 start-up, and an average 26.27% in the past three years. Gates and his research team of nine say, Financials are "off the table," because banks and insurance companies can have opaque balance sheets. The group avoids technology and biotech because their fates are tied to short product cycles. And it generally doesn't invest in "buried" resources, such as oil and gas companies, because it finds their intrinsic value hard to determine. Instead, the $814M fund looks at nuts-and-bolts types of businesses. Stocks that have worked for the group are: Nortek (NTKS) and Flotek Industries (FTK). They are keen on are: Copart (CPRT) and Dover Downs Gaming & Entertainment (DDE). Reference Link :theflyonthewall.com |
