An Obama victory – at least in the short term -- could boost stocks in certain sectors. Obama strongly supports funding alternative energy which would be a boon for companies in wind, solar and biofuels, including First Solar (FSLR) and SunPower (SPWR). It would be positive for generic-drug makers and hospitals. A Romney victory could benefit oil companies like ExxonMobil (XOM) and Halliburton (HAL). It benefits big banks such as JPMorgan Chase (JPM) and Citigroup (C ), and defense contractors like Lockheed Martin (LMT), Boeing (BA) and Raytheon (RTN). Insurance companies like American International Group (AIG), MetLife (MET) and Prudential Financial (PRU) would also applaud a Romney victory. As Romney has vowed to repeal some parts of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, this poses a big win for medical-device companies that otherwise face additional taxes next year to help fund the reform measures. Healthcare names to benefit are Aetna (AET), UnitedHealth Group (UNH) and Cigna (CI). Also, more insured Americans mean fewer unpaid medical bills and more patients able to pay for medications, a win for drug makers and the hospital giant HCA Holdings (HCA). At this point, it remains anyone's guess which candidate will be taking office next year. Though clearly behind in the polls two weeks ago, Romney has been gaining ground since his spirited performance in last week's presidential debate in Denver. Reference Link | |
