14:28 EDTIBM, FIO, STEC, OCZFlash memory makers rise after IBM buys Texas Memory
After IBM (IBM) acquired solid state drive flash memory provider Texas Memory Systems, research firm Piper Jaffray believes that the deal will increase demand by adding "scarcity value" to products made by the remaining vendors in the solid state drive/PCIe market, including Fusion-IO (FIO), OCZ Technology (OCZ), and STEC (STEC). Texas Memory, which employs about 100 people, sells solid state disk-based storage systems and PCIe cards that come with flash memory. PCIe is a standard that enables a computer's motherboard to communicate with networks, processors, and video and sound cards. Piper expects IBM to continue incorporating cards made by Fusion-io, while enabling customers to choose Texas Memory's solution if they wish to do so. In mid-afternoon trading, OCZ jumped 7.74% to $5.20, Fusion-IO surged 5.90% to $27.81, and STEC added 2.30% to $7.12.
