14:06 EDTFB, GOOGWilliam Hambrecht says Google was a better model for new IPOs, Barron's says
Bill Hambrecht, once co-founder of Hambrecht & Quist, then founder of WR Hambrecht talks with Barron's about why Facebook's (FB) IPO went awry and why Google (GOOG) was a better model for new offerings. According to Hambrecht's research, most of the marquee Internet IPOs done over the last two years have performed poorly after the first day's trading. The Facebook offering clearly shows that the traditional offering doesn't work. Hambrecht says, there's no doubt that Facebook's troubles have chilled the market. The SEC is reviewing the offering. And, there's talk about forcing Nasdaq to update its systems. Google went public fairly early in its growth cycle, so investors could participate in the upside. Google chose a modified Dutch auction to avoid the insider game when it came public. Google opening on the first day at $100.01 and has steadily increased more than fourfold. On the other hand, Facebook looks like a deal dominated by insiders. Bottom-line: The Facebook IPO will ultimately force regulators to make all information available to everyone. Reference Link
