theflyonthewall.com: Electronic Arts retreats after guidance disappoints Street
Electronic Arts (ERTS) reported Q3 EPS of 33c, compared with analysts' consensus estimate of 31c. The video game maker's revenue was in-line with expectations. However, Electronic Arts predicted that its FY11 EPS would be 50c-70c, versus the consensus estimate of 74c. "EA is growing share in our packaged goods business and our digital businesses continue to grow rapidly," said Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello. In spite of the CEO's optimistic comments, Needham analysts Sean McGowan and Patrick O'Brien responded to the company's results and guidance by downgrading the stock to Hold from Buy. Needham was disappointed by the guidance, and the analysts now doubt that the stock can move much beyond its current range in coming quarters. Conversely, Wedbush Security analysts Michael Pachter and Edward Woo think Electronic Arts' guidance is now "realistically conservative," and they believe the video game maker is poised to increase its earnings in FY11. Wedbush maintains an Outperform rating on the stock. In mid-morning trading, Electronic Arts slumped $1.53, or 8.75%, to $15.98. :theflyonthewall.com

theflyonthewall.com: Electronic Arts: Earnings release technical preview, float-skew, bull pattern
BULLISH CASE: There is a potential double bottom, or "W", pattern on the daily chart. The lows were at the $16 area, peak of the pattern is at the $19 area, which would be the first objective. The potential for the pattern, if it triggers and completes, would be to the $21 area. On better than expected news/outlook the stock could trade to the upper limit of the very short-term bullish price channel at $18.10. On a bullish breakout above the price channel the following resistance levels would become upside objectives: $18.53, $18.87, $19.20, $19.50, $19.81, $20.12, $20.47, $20.88, $21.22, $21.55. BEARISH CASE: On worse than expected news/outlook the stock could trade to the lower limit of the price channel at $17.06. On a bearish breakdown below the price channel the following support levels would become downside objectives: $16.88, $16.56, $15.89, $15.50, $15.19, $14.88, $14.38, $14.03, $13.69, $13.44. NOTE: There is a moderate short-base at 3 days to cover, but with a large 8.2% of the float short. Traders are positioned more for negative news. Reactions on a surprise, especially a positive one given the potential bullish pattern and float-skew, have a high probability of being extreme in duration and price. High gap risk. :theflyonthewall.com
