Ericsson (ERIC) and Samsung (SSNLF) have reached an agreement on global patent licenses between the two companies. The cross license agreement covers patents relating to GSM, UMTS, and LTE standards for both networks and handsets. The agreement includes an initial payment and ongoing royalty payments from Samsung to Ericsson for the term of the new multi-year license agreement. The initial payment in the agreement will impact Ericsson sales and net income in Q4 2013 by SEK 4.2 B. and SEK 3.3B. respectively. Ericsson expects that the initial payment in the agreement will impact Ericsson's operating cash flow in the beginning of 2014. The details of the agreement are confidential and will not be disclosed. Information of the financial impact of the initial payment on Ericsson's Q4 results will be included in Ericsson's Q4 earnings report.

Nokia (NOK) said in a statement, "In relation to recent media speculation Nokia and Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) confirm that they are in advanced discussions with respect to a potential full combination, which would take the form of a public exchange offer by Nokia for Alcatel-Lucent." Nokia cautioned that there "can be no certainty at this stage that these discussions will result in any agreement or transaction." The statement comes after Bloomberg reported yesterday afternoon that Nokia was in advanced talks to buy Alcatel-Lucent's wireless assets to better compete with Ericsson (ERIC) in telecommunications equipment. Shares of Nokia are down 65c to $7.65 in pre-market trading while Alcatel-Lucent is up 22c to $4.57.

Ericsson has announced that it is to join forces with Scania and Sweden's Royal Institute of Technology in their Integrated Transport Research Lab to explore the transport solutions of the future. The joint initiative, which will explore areas such as autonomous buses and improved systems for traffic management, forms part of the "5G for Sweden" program that was announced in March. The ITRL Lab is set to run until the end of June 2021.
