Piper Jaffray is positive on shares of eBay (EBAY) going into Wednesday's June quarter report, saying it sees limited downside due to low expectations. Piper believes investors have become "increasingly bearish" on eBay over the past couple of months given the security breach and the change in Google's (GOOG) algorithm. The firm sees these concerns are near term in nature and reiterates an Overweight rating on eBay with a $63 price target.

eBay (EBAY) and Sotheby’s (BID) announced a partnership to develop an innovative online platform that will make it easier for millions of people worldwide to discover, browse and acquire exceptional works of art, antiques and collectibles. eBay and Sotheby’s will start by offering a number of live auctions that are taking place at Sotheby’s headquarters in New York. To accomplish this, eBay in the near future will be launching a newly-designed experience on its site, tailored for collectors of rare, unique and premium art and collectibles as well as first-time buyers. Sotheby’s will be the preeminent anchor tenant in the revamped marketplace, which will include a new live auction feature and real-time bidding from anywhere around the world. There has been a distinct downtrend in the name from the highs of March down to the lows of June. After a brief period of basing the shares are breaking out from that downtrend resistance line. At the current price of $51.59, next resistance is at $52.33 which was a recent pivot high on a closing basis. Support is at $50.94.

Piper Jaffray believes a large part of the $9B in cash eBay expects to repatriate to the U.S. will be used for acquisitions in the payments space. The cash, equating to $6B net of taxes, could help eBay take advantage of the shift to mobile payments, the firm says. Piper lists Square, VeriFone (PAY), iZettle and Corduro as companies in the payment space that are within acquisition range for eBay. The firm has an Overweight rating on eBay with a $63 price target.
