13:59 EDTEBAY, MSFT, GOOGeBay says returns from search keyword ads fall below conventional estimates
In a report dated March 6, researchers at eBay (EBAY) questioned the value of traditional advertising on search portals like Google (GOOG) and Microsoft's (MSFT) Bing. In the report on "a series of large-scale field experiments done at eBay" meant to measure the effectiveness of paid search advertisements, eBay team members said they found "brand-keyword ads have no short-term benefits." Returns from all other keywords are a fraction of conventional estimates, the report also contended. The research found that new and infrequent users are positively influenced by ads, but existing loyal users whose purchasing behavior is not influenced by paid search account for most of the advertising expenses, which eBay's team said resulted in "average returns that are negative."
