10:07 EDTNXPI, V, EBAY, BRCM, GOOG, MA, AAPLAnalyst predicts Apple will take on PayPal with digital wallet
Apple (AAPL) may unveil a digital wallet following the release of the iPhone 6, putting the tech giant in direct competition with eBay's (EBAY) PayPal, Gene Munster, an analyst at research firm Piper Jaffray wrote. WHAT'S NEW: Apple's upcoming iPhone 6 will include near-field communication technology, or NFC, potentially giving the company the opportunity to offer a digital wallet, Piper analyst Gene Munster stated in a note to investors earlier today. But such an initiative would present a number of challenges for Apple, the analyst stated. Specifically, the iPhone maker would have to build a retail or terminal partner base from scratch, while PayPal's digital wallet is already available at about 2M retail locations, according to Munster. Moreover, Apple would have to develop a security solution for its digital wallet, the analyst added. Although the credit card data that Apple has obtained from iTunes users is a valuable asset, PayPal is already facing competition from a number of companies in the digital wallet space, including Google (GOOG), Visa (V) and MasterCard (MA), the analyst noted. He kept an Overweight rating on eBay. WHAT'S NOTABLE: Broadcom (BRCM) and NXP Semiconductors (NXPI) have developed NFC solutions. PRICE ACTION: In early trading, eBay was flat at $49.

He believes it is unlikely that the company launches anything in the next five years, however. Munster reiterated an Overweight rating on Apple with a $160 price target. The stock closed Friday up 62c to $127.08.
