Executives at top European telecom companies, including Deutsche Telekom (DTEGY), France Telecom (FTE), Telecom Italia (TI) and Telefonica (TEF), privately met with EU competition chief Joaquín Almunia and came away intent on exploring the idea of creating a pan-European telecom infrastructure network, given their frustrations that the region's disjointed market has hurt their ability to compete, according to Financial Times, citing sources close to the talks. At the 2015 Mobile World Congress, Telefónica (TEF) and HP (HPQ) announced that the telecommunications company has selected HP as the technology provider and systems integrator of the Telefónica Virtualization Infrastructure project, or UNICA. Telefónica will implement the end-to-end HP OpenNFV platform stack, including server, software, orchestration and networking technologies, carrier grade HP Helion OpenStack technology, services and expertise.

Intel (INTC) Security announced that it has joined forces with Deutsche Telekom (DTEGY) in a new carrier deal which will bring its True Key password and identity management solution to the European market. The True Key application works on phones, tablets and computers to log consumers into their apps and online accounts, without having to type or remember multiple passwords, instead using multiple factors such as facial features, fingerprints or a trusted device. True Key is currently available through a limited release and will be generally available later in the year.

Brazil's antitrust regulator has reached a preliminary merger deal with Telefonica (TEF) and Vivendi (VIVHY) that sees the companies agreeing to "adopt measures to effectively assure supply, quality and competitive prices for fixed-line telephone, broadband internet and pay-TV markets," reports Reuters, citing an official gazette.
