During German Chancellor Angela Merkel's state visit to China, Song Zhiyong, CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa (DLAKY), signed a memorandum of understanding in Beijing to expand the scope of the strategic partnership with Air China (AIRYY). In the summer season of 2014, Air China and Lufthansa have a joint capacity input of 81 flights per week on the Sino-German routes.

As Vereinigung Cockpit increases pressure on Lufthansa in an on-going disagreement regarding retirement benefits, pilots working for the airline announced plans to walk-out on all cargo flights leaving any German airport on Wednesday and Thursday, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing comments from a Lufthansa spokesman.
