14:36 EDTDBEarnings Watch: JPMorgan reports amid bounceback predictions for banks
JPMorgan Chase (JPM) is expected to report third quarter earnings after the close on Tuesday, October 13, with a conference call scheduled for 5:00 pm ET. JPMorgan is a global financial services firm operating in more than 60 countries. EXPECTATIONS: Analysts are looking for earnings per share of $1.37 on revenue of $23.69B. EPS consensus ranges $1.24-$1.46 on a revenue range of $22.74B-$24.60B, according to First Call. During its last earnings conference call, the company said its net interest income, or NII, is stable and "will increase" when interest rates rise, adding that it remains focused on reducing expenses by $2B in 2017. Note also that CEO Jamie Dimon told investors he may not appear on the company's forthcoming conference calls. LAST QUARTER: On July 14, JPMorgan reported second quarter EPS of $1.54 against expectations for $1.44, and revenue of $24.53B versus consensus estimates of $24.49B. Additionally, the company said tangible book value rose 7% to $46.13 while core loans grew 12% year-over-year. NEWS: In mid-July, the Federal Reserve Board proposed a rule to modify the timing of certain bank stress testing requirements, taking effect for the 2016 stress testing cycles. The Federal Reserve subsequently released a draft of a final rule to impose capital surcharges on so-called systemically important banks, which it estimated would reach 4.5% for JPMorgan, 3.5% for Citi (C), and 3% for Bank of America (BAC), Goldman Sachs (GS) and Morgan Stanley (MS). On August 19, the Wall Street Journal reported that JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley are partnering to create a new entity to clean and archive pricing reference data at a lower cost than what the banks would spend individually. Business Insider reported on October 8 that JPMorgan is one of several major banks in talks for a Deutsche Bank (DB) trading portfolio notionally valued at more than $250B, while Reuters reported on October 12 that three consortiums led by JPMorgan, Citi, and Morgan Stanley have submitted bids for a $20B loan portfolio being sold by the British government. STREET RESEARCH: Following last quarter's earnings release, research firm Baird raised its price target on JPMorgan shares to $75 from $70, saying it would view any potential weakness as a buying opportunity. On September 15, Goldman Sachs analysts said recent selloffs in large U.S. banks look overdone, with JPMorgan called the best defensive pick in the current macro environment. On September 16, the stock was upgraded to Outperform at BMP Capital, which cited high growth potential and a significantly discounted valuation. More recently, Baird argued on October 1 that even mild quarterly results could see bouncebacks for defensive names like JPMorgan. PRICE ACTION: After dropping roughly 12% in late August, shares of JPMorgan are down fractionally ahead of the company's third quarter results.
