theflyonthewall.com: Coinstar falls after reporting weaker than expected revenue
Coinstar (CSTR) reported Q3 EPS of 31c ex items, compared with analysts' consensus estimate of 25c. Including the sale of the company's entertainment services division in September, Coinstar's EPS came in at $1.34. However, the company's revenue was lower than expected. Coinstar predicted that its FY09 EPS would be 98c-$1.04, versus the consensus of 85c, but the company provided FY09 revenue guidance of $1.15B-$1.165B, versus the consensus of $1.27B. In a note to investors, a Merriman analyst reports that Coinstar's results missed the firm's estimates. However, the firm, noting that Coinstar's DVD sales surged 99% year-over-year while comps increased 26%, believes that the trends of the company's DVD business are still strong. Although obtaining DVDs is becoming more difficult and expensive for Coinstar, Merriman believes that margin improvements will help offset these higher costs. The firm reports that the comparative sales of Coinstar's coin counting business declined 5.4% year-over-year, but Merriman expects this business to rebound as the economy improves next year. Merriman reiterates a Buy rating on the stock. In late morning trading, Coinstar sank $3.79, or 11.89%, to $28.08. :theflyonthewall.com

theflyonthewall.com: On The Fly: Closing Wrap
Stocks on Wall Street were higher, as the market waits another day for Greece to reach a deal that will allow it to get its much needed financial aid. Stock futures were lower throughout the pre-market trading session as investors remained nervous without a Greek debt deal in place. The futures action led to a lower open for the broader market but the losses were moderate. The market drifted off its lows following comments from Fed Chairman Bernanke to the Senate Banking Committee in which he reiterated that interest rates would remain low through 2014. The averages crossed into positive territory and continued to drift while remaining in a narrow range... ECONOMIC EVENTS: Domestically, the Fed reported that consumer credit rose by $19.3B in December. From Europe, reports early in the day said that Greek politicians had drafted an agreement on austerity measures that will allow the country to get its next bailout payment, but later reports said that a meeting on the deal was postponed to tomorrow... MARKET NEWS: Coca-Cola's (KO) Q4 earnings fell from the same quarter last year but its adjusted EPS topped expectations, sending shares higher and buoying the Dow... Xstrata (XSRAY) agreed to be acquired by Glencore in a share swap that values the miner at $61.9B. The company also reported earnings and revenue that beat Street estimates... MAJOR MOVERS: Notable gainers included Coinstar (CSTR), up $6.97, or 13.79%, to $57.53, after its Q4 results surprised to the upside and the company agreed to buy assets of NCR's (NCR) entertainment business for $100M, and Standard Pacific (SPF), up 62c, or 15.31%, to $4.67, on better than expected earnings. Among the noteworthy losers were Nevsun Resources (NSU), down $1.94, or 30.60%, to $4.40, after its 2012 production guidance disappointed, and Fusion-io (FIO), down $1.70, or 6.88%, to $23.02, as Craig-Hallum reiterated its Sell rating but Lazard Capital said it expects no meaningful change to Fusion-io's near-term revenue trajectory as a result of a competing product introduction from EMC (EMC)... INDICES: The Dow gained 33.07, or 0.26%, to 12,878.20; the Nasdaq added 2.09, or 0.07%, to 2,904.08; and the S&P 500 rose 2.72, or 0.20%, to 1,347.05. :theflyonthewall.com

theflyonthewall.com: On The Fly: Mid-Day Wrap
Stocks on Wall Street were higher at mid-day, as investors keep one eye on earnings and one eye on Greece. Stock futures were lower in pre-market trading which led to a lower open for the broader market. The averages were weak for the first hour of trading but slowly drifted off their lows following Fed Chairman Bernanke’s comments before the Senate Banking Committee. The comments echoed the sentiments the Chairman made last week in which he said interest rates would remain low through 2014. The market eventually pushed through the flat line and into positive territory and all three major indices are now solidly higher... ECONOMIC EVENTS: With little market moving domestic economic data released again today, Europe, and specifically Greece, remained front and center in terms of the macroeconomic picture. Reports circulated that Greek politicians drafted an agreement on austerity measures that will allow the country to get its next bailout payment, but no formal agreement was announced... MARKET NEWS: The day after shares of Coinstar (CSTR) advanced on news of a movie rental joint venture deal with Verizon (VZ), Coinstar surged again as its fourth-quarter earnings more than doubled and it agreed to buy assets of NCR's (NCR) entertainment business for $100M. NCR shares rose as well on the deal and its own earnings report... Dow component Coca-Cola's (KO) Q4 earnings fell 71% but its adjusted EPS topped expectations, sending shares higher. Among others reporting earnings, winners included Yum! Brands (YUM) and Anadarko (APC), while Emerson (EMR), BP (BP), and Vishay (VSH) were among the losers... MasterCard (MA) increased its dividend to 30c from 15c... MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers were SolarWinds (SWI) and Standard Pacific (SPF), following their quarterly reports. Noteworthy losers included Nevsun Resources (NSU), after issuing its 2012 production guidance, and Achillion (ACHN), following a downgrade to Underperform from Buy at BofA/Merrill... theflyonthewall.com: On The Fly: Mid-Day Wrap
Stocks on Wall Street were lower at mid-day, with the weakness attributed to concern over the failure for Greece and "the troika" to agree on terms of a budget that will trigger additional bailout funds for the troubled nation. The averages have moved in a very narrow range since the open, as investors await news out of Europe. There has been little in the way of U.S. economic news as the market digests its gains from Friday, following the better than expected monthly jobs report... ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., little market moving economic data was released. Europe's markets were lower following another missed deadline by Greece... MARKET NEWS: Shares of Coinstar (CSTR) advanced, while rival Netflix (NFLX) retreated, after Coinstar's Redbox unit and Verizon (VZ) announced that they would form a movie rental joint venture. Also of note, Coinstar reports earnings after today's close... Humana (HUM) reported Q4 earnings and revenue that missed estimates, but did raise its FY12 view. However, even its higher bar does not meet Street expectations... MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers were O'Charley's (CHUX), which is being purchased by Fidelity National Financial (FNF) for $9.85 per share, and Threshold Pharmaceuticals (THLD), after signing a global agreement with Merck KGaA (MKGAY) to co-develop and commercialize TH-302, Threshold's small molecule hypoxia-targeted drug. Noteworthy losers included Sohu.com (SOHU), after its earnings and revenue beat expectations but its guidance was disappointing, and Changyou.com (CYOU), following a similar report with good news from the previous quarter but cautionary statements about the next one... INDICES: Near noon, the Dow was down 42.61, or 0.33%, to 12,819.62; the Nasdaq was down 7.07, or 0.24%, to 2,898.59; and the S&P 500 was down 2.87, or 0.21%, to 1,342.03. :theflyonthewall.com

theflyonthewall.com: Netflix sinks after Verizon announces joint venture with Redbox
Netflix (NFLX) is retreating after Verizon (VZ) and Coinstar (CSTR) announced that they would form a movie rental joint venture. Expected to launch in the second half of 2012, the joint venture will combine the kiosks of Coinstar unit Redbox with a new video on-demand streaming and download service from Verizon. The joint venture will also sell subscriptions, the company said. In December, there was speculation that Verizon would look to acquire Netflix. Verizon subsequently denied that it had any interest in buying Netflix, but there may have still been some speculation that such a deal could take place in the future. In addition to creating more competition for Netflix, Verizon's deal with Coinstar may have dampened speculation about an acquisition of Netflix by the telecom company. However, Yahoo executives discussed acquiring Netflix before the latter company's stock price rallied over the last several weeks, All Things D reported today. In early trading, Netflix declined $3.81, or 3.01%, to $122.62. Meanwhile, Coinstar (CSTR) added 1.10% to $50.20. :theflyonthewall.com
