13:22 EDTCSIQ, SPWR, YGE, FSLR, JKS, TOTCanadian Solar announces contract, says China module market strong
Shares of Canadian Solar (CSIQ) are rising after the company announced that it had been awarded a new module supply contract in China and made positive comments about its outlook in that market. Canadian Solar has manufacturing facilities in both Canada and China. Another company in the sector, SunPower (SPWR), is lower despite a positive mention by Citigroup. WHAT'S NEW: Canadian Solar announced that it would supply modules that will produce 100 megawatts of power to Zhenfa New Energy Science & Technology. Zhenfa will use the modules for four of its solar power projects in China, Canadian Solar stated. Moreover, Canadian Solar stated that demand for solar modules in China remains strong, and should exceed 10 gigawatts in 2014. WHAT'S NOTABLE: After meeting with the management of American solar energy company SunPower, Citigroup analyst Shahriar Pourreza wrote in a note to investors today that the meetings reinforced his positive stance on the company. SunPower should benefit from new projects it can secure as a result of its relationship with French energy company Total (TOT), the analyst believes. Meanwhile, the company is gaining market share in Japan ,and its performance there has been better than expected, according to Pourreza. The analyst raised his price target on the shares to $39 from $32 and kept a Buy rating on the stock. PRICE ACTION: In mid-afternoon trading, Canadian Solar climbed 4.6% to $28, SunPower (SPWR) lost 0.5% to $27.90, Jinko Solar (JKS) rose 3.5% to $26.20, Yingli Green (YGE) gained 2.4% to $4.43, and First Solar (FSLR) advanced 1% to $54.70.
