19:26 EDTCNXCONSOL Energy mine temporarily shut down due to fire
CONSOL Energy announced that yesterday at 2:00 pm, smoke was detected exiting the Orndoff shaft at the company's Blacksville No. 2 Mine near Wayne in Greene County, PA. All 121 day shift underground employees were safely evacuated through the Kuhntown portal and none sustained injuries. Since the discovery of smoke at the shaft, CONSOL Energy, working closely with federal and state authorities, was able to identify the general location of a fire and began implementing an aggressive plan to contain and extinguish it. It is unknown when mine operations will resume, as no personnel will re-enter the mine until it is determined safe to do so. Blacksville No. 2 produces approximately 400,000 tons per month under normal operations.

08:21 EDTCNXWhile Appalachian mines close, U.S. ramps up coal imports, WSJ says
Coal imports surged 44% to 5.4M metric tons during the first six months of this year compared with last, despite coal mines closing throughout the Appalachia region, reported The Wall Street Journal, which noted that IHS Energy said it costs $26 a ton to ship coal from Central Appalachia to Florida but only $15 a ton to get coal from a mine in Colombia. Imports supply just 1% of U.S. coal consumption, but the imports, especially from Colombia, "are a factor" in mine closings, the report added. Publicly traded coal companies include Alpha Natural (ANR), Arch Coal (ACI), CONSOL (CNX), Cloud Peak (CLD), Peabody (BTU), Alliance Resource Partners (ARLP), and Walter Energy (WLT). Reference Link
