19:45 EDTCMCSA, TWC, NFLXComcast responds to Netflix opposition to Time Warner Cable deal
Comcast (CMCSA) issued a statement in response to Netflix's (NFLX) statement in its quarterly earnings report that it opposes Comcast's proposed merger with Time Warner Cable (TWC). Comcast said, in part, "Netflix's opposition to our Time Warner Cable transaction is based on inaccurate claims and arguments. There has been no company that has had a stronger commitment to openness of the Internet than Comcast and we are the only ISP in the country that is currently legally bound by the FCCs vacated Net Neutrality rules. In fact, one of the many benefits of our proposed transaction with Time Warner Cable will be the extension of Net Neutrality protections to millions of additional Americans." Comcast concluded by saying, "Netflix is free to express its opinions. But they should be factually based. And Netflix should be transparent that its opinion is not about protecting the consumer or about Net Neutrality. Rather, its about improving Netflixs business model by shifting costs that it has always borne to all users of the Internet and not just to Netflix customers." Reference Link

12:21 EDTCMCSACable ad upfront volumes may drop 4% or more, WSJ says
Two of the U.S.'s biggest marketers, Procter & Gamble (PG) and General Motors (GM), have pulled back on their TV network advertising commitments in advance of the "upfront" selling season for cable networks, said The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter. The overall volume of ad dollars committed to cable networks during the upfront, which is still under way, could be down 4% or more from last year, people familiar with the situation said. Notable owners of cable television stations include 21st Century Fox (FOXA), Time Warner (TWX), Disney (DIS), CBS (CBS), Comcast (CMCSA), Discovery (DISCA), Viacom (VIAB), and AMC Networks (AMCX). The report added that cutbacks partly reflect a shift of tv ad budgets to digital media, including online video. Google (GOOG) has a large presence in online video with YouTube and Facebook (FB) is taking steps to grow in the area. Reference Link

08:03 EDTCMCSA, NFLX, TWCPublic speak out on FCC 'net-neutrality' plan, WSJ says
The Federal Communications Commission's has received more than 677K comments so far from the public on its proposed 'net-neutrality' rules for how broadband providers can treat content traveling over their networks and a random sampling of the input suggests that the agency will have work to do to sell the plan, according to The Wall Street Journal. Companies that provide broadband Internet service include Comcast (CMCSA), AT&T (T), Verizon (VZ) Time Warner Cable (TWC), and Cablevision (CVC).
