| theflyonthewall.com: | On The Fly: U.S. Market Wrap-Up for Tuesday 3/16 | | The futures were slightly higher in pre market trading and several economic reports failed to move them. It looked as if the market would remain in its narrow trading range. Once the market opened it did just that. The market moved back and forth across the flat line several times in what looked like a lack of commitment from investors. After the Fed released its policy statement at 2:15, the market traded sideways, then advanced to its highs of the session by the close…The Dow rose 43.83 to 10,685.98, the S&P added 8.95 to 1,159.46, and the Nasdaq gained 15.80 to 2,378.01…Among the biggest gainers: Benihana (BNHNA) surged 7.7% to $6.01 after announcing that the company is being pursued by former Icahn Associates executive Russell Glass, who has offered $7 a share, a premium of about 19%. Town Sports International (CLUB) soared 16.8% to $3.90 after reporting Q4 EPS beat expectations by a wide margin. The losers included: Republic First Bancorp (FRBK) which slumped 26.8% to $3.22 after announcing that the holding company of First Republic Bank and Republic First Bank of Delaware scrapped plans to merge with Metro Bancorp, citing “uncertainties over regulatory approval.” Sequenom (SQNM) dropped 21.8% to 6.08 after posting Q4 EPS that missed analysts’ estimates by 21%. CURRENCY: The dollar closed 0.43% lower on the yen at 90.27 and 0.28% lower on the euro at 0.7258…COMMODITIES: Crude oil closed up 1.90 to 81.70...Natural gas lost 0.04 to 4.35...Gold was higher by 17.10 at 1,122.20…ECONOMIC DATA: Housing starts for February were hurt by winter storms. Housing starts dropped 5.9% in February but from a revised higher January number. The annualized pace in February came in at 575K versus consensus of 565K ...ICSC-Goldman Store Sales were up 3.2% on a year-over-year basis and down 0.4% on a week-over-week basis…Import and Export prices for February came in with a month-over-month change of down 0.5% for export prices and down 0.3% for import prices…Redbook reported a 3.2% year-over-year increase in same-store sales in the March 13 week. The FOMC left its target rate unchanged at 0%-0.25%, and said that rates will remain “exceptionally low for an extended period.” Tomorrow…MBA Purchase Applications, Producer Price Index, and the EIA Petroleum Status Report are due…Notable companies reporting Wednesday before the opening bell include: Actuant (ATU) and Crimson Exploration (CXPO). :theflyonthewall.com |
