07:14 EDTCHTR, LMCA, CVCLiberty Media likely to ultimately control Charter, says Citigroup
Following reports that John Malone's Liberty Media (LMCA) is near a deal to acquire 25% of Charter Communications (CHTR), Citigroup notes that Liberty rarely makes large investments without a clear path to control. Citi expects Liberty will ultimately control Charter, but points out it could take until 2018 before Liberty owns 50% of the company. If Liberty gains control, Citi sees significantly increased odds of Charter or Sirius (SIRI) being spun and merged with Liberty's publicly traded twin. Citi also thinks Charter will be a national consolidator of the U.S. cable market following the combination. The firm has Buy ratings on Charter, Liberty Media and Cablevision (CVC).
