| theflyonthewall.com: | Travelers climbs after announcing better than expected results | | The Travelers Companies (TRV), an insurance company, reported Q4 EPS of $2.36, compared with analysts' consensus estimate of $1.49. The company's revenue was also higher than expected. Travelers' net written premiums declined 4% year-over-year, but its return on equity for the quarter came in at 18%, versus 14% for the full year. However, the insurer predicted that its FY10 EPS would come in at $5.20-$5.55, versus the consensus estimate of $5.56, although Travelers said that its pricing power was better than the industry as a whole. "We believe our outlook for return on equity as reflected in our 2010 guidance is consistent with our target of a mid-teens return on equity over time," said Travelers CEO Jay Fishman. "In light of the continued historically low returns we anticipate will be available in the investment marketplace and modest premium growth opportunities given the economy, we expect to continue to return capital aggressively. In addition, our strategy will be to continue to seek premium rate gains where needed," the CEO added. In mid-morning trading, Travelers gained $1.68, or 3.46%, to $50.58. Other insurance companies also advanced, with Chubb (CB) climbing 2.62% to $50.18, Prudential (PRU) adding 0.85% to $51.14, and Hartford (HIG) gaining 1.09% to $24.93. :theflyonthewall.com |
