16:41 EDTZZ, KKR, C, FL, TPX, GDI, SKUL, P, MCDOn The Fly: Closing Wrap
Stocks on Wall Street were higher after positive jobs data that indicated employers added more jobs than expected and the unemployment rate fell. The market opened higher before quickly erasing those gains near mid-morning, though the markets moved steadily higher off those lows through the session... ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., nonfarm payrolls climbed 236K in February, well above the forecast for the addition of 165K jobs. Also, the unemployment rate fell to 7.7% from 7.9%, which was a greater decline than expected. Wholesale inventories rose 1.2% January, versus expectations for a 0.3% advance in the month... COMPANY NEWS: Following the Federal Reserve's report on its latest "stress tests," in which it said the nation's largest banks are collectively in a much stronger capital position than before the financial crisis. Citigroup (C) gained $1.68, or 3.73%, to $46.68 after announcing that its capital plan submitted to the Fed requested a $1.2B common stock buyback program as well as the maintenance of its current quarterly dividend of 1c per share... McDonald's (MCD) shares were up $1.62, or 1.67%, to $98.71 after the company reported its same-store sales fell 1.5% during February, a less-than-expected decline, with the company adding that results would have been even better if not for a calendar shift... Gardner Denver (GDI) announced it had agreed to be acquired by KKR (KKR) for $76 per share in cash, though shares added just 89c, or 1.21%, to $74.74 as the acquisition had been roundly telegraphed in recent media reports... MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Pandora (P), up $2.06, or 17.56%, to $13.79 after reporting stronger than expected fourth quarter revenues, announcing the resignation of its CEO, and receiving at least three analyst upgrades. Also higher was Tempur-Pedic (TPX), up $2.48, or 5.82%, to $45.10 after the company announced it received FTC clearance for its acquisition of Sealy (ZZ). Among the noteworthy losers was Skullcandy (SKUL), down $1.51, or 22.47%, to $5.21 after it provided disappointing guidance and its shares were downgraded by at least six firms. Also lower were shares of Foot Locker (FL), down $2.52, or 7.14%, to $32.79 after its quarterly report, though shares were defended by at least four analyst firms...INDICES: The Dow was up 67.58, or 0.47%, to 14,397.07; the S&P 500 was up 6.92, or 0.45%, to 1,551.18; the Nasdaq was up 12.28, or 0.38%, to 3,244.37.
