16:08 EDTTAT&T added more than 1M subs in Q1
AT&T added more than 1M subscribers in the first quarter, with year-over-year improvements in every category. Total wireless subscribers increased by 1,062,000 in the quarter, led by 625,000 postpaid net adds and 693,000 connected device net adds. This was the strongest first-quarter postpaid growth in five years. These gains were offset somewhat by a net loss of 50,000 prepaid subscribers, due to declines in session-based tablets, and a net loss of 206,000 reseller subscribers, primarily due to losses in low-revenue 2G subscriber accounts. Prepaid net adds include first-quarter results from Leap Wireless only after AT&T acquired the company on March 13. Postpaid net adds include 311,000 smartphones. Total branded smartphone net adds (both postpaid and prepaid) were 566,000. Total branded tablet net adds were 313,000.

10:43 EDTCCitigroup to resubmit capital plan in 2015, address issues in 2014
Citigroup CEO Michael Corbat said at today's annual meeting, "Based on our conversations with the Federal Reserve, we don't believe their objection was owing to an issue with our business model, our strategy, levels of capital, or capability to generate capital. We are consulting closely with the Fed to identify exactly where they believe our procedures fall short, so that we can fix the problems they've identified. And rather than resubmitting this year, we've decided to focus our energies on addressing those issues in preparation for our 2015 capital plan. This will require investment in new talent, the acceleration of spending on certain systems, and changes to the way we build, validate and test our scenarios....I want, and our shareholders deserve, an industrial strength, permanent solution that paves the way for sustainable capital return over time. And achieving that will be my highest priority for the remainder of 2014."

07:16 EDTT, AAPLiPhone sales could be hurt by fading phone subsidies, WSJ reports
Sales of Apple's (AAPL) iPhones may be further pressured as carriers make faster progress in transitioning customers away from subsidies, the Wall Street Journal reports. U.S. wireless carriers like T-Mobile US (TMUS) and AT&T (T) have been having more success than expected in moving customers to non-subsidy plans, a transition that could harm sales of expensive handsets such as the iPhone. Wi-LAN (WILN) announced that it has filed an appeal with the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in its patent dispute with Apple (AAPL) involving WiLAN's U.S. Patent No. RE37,802. On April 3, Judge Rodney Gilstrap of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, ruled that the Jury had no basis for invalidating the 802 patent at the trial of the WiLAN vs. Apple lawsuit in October 2013. In addition to this case, WiLAN is in litigation with Apple in the Southern District of California concerning the infringement of two patents related to LTE technology. WiLAN expects the case in Southern California to go to trial later this year if not settled earlier.
13:12 EDTTEarnings Preview: AT&T sentiment mixed ahead of Q1 report
AT&T (T) is expected to report Q1 earnings after the market close on Tuesday, April 22, with a conference call scheduled for 4:30 pm ET. AT&T is a global telecommunications company offering wireless and long distance services. EXPECTATIONS: Analysts are looking for EPS of 70c on revenue of $32.41B, according to First Call. The consensus range for EPS is 64c-74c on revenue of $31.96B-$33.24B. LAST QUARTER: AT&T reported Q4 adjusted EPS of 53c against estimates for 50c, on revenue of $33.2B against estimates for $33.06B. Q4 postpaid churn was reported at 1.11%. AT&T reported the following in Q4: more than 500,000 branded smartphone net adds, including postpaid and prepaid; wireless operating income $1.4B; total postpaid ARPU up 2.1%; net increase in total wireless subscribers 809,000; connected device adds 398,000. On its Q4 earnings report, the company forecast FY14 adjusted EPS growth in the mid-single digits compared to a consensus at the time of $2.67. It expected FY14 revenue growth of 2%-3%, compared to the then consensus of $131.12B. On March 31, the board of AT&T authorized the repurchase of up to 300M shares, representing approximately 6% of AT&T common shares outstanding, with no expiration date. Due to the large share buyback program, The New York times noted that AT&T would be less likely to make a bid for Vodafone (VOD), something that had been speculated throughout the quarter. STREET RESEARCH: Street research has been mixed in the weeks leading up to AT&T's Q1 earnings report. On February 11, Drexel Hamilton initiated AT&T with a Buy rating and price target of $40. On March 25, HSBC downgraded AT&T to Neutral from Overweight based on expectations for increased industry price competition and a peak margin expansion. The firm lowered its price target on the shares to $35 from $39. PRICE ACTION: AT&Tís shares are up approximately 6% since the company's Q4 report, but are down about 6% from year ago levels. In early afternoon trading ahead of tomorrow's Q1 report, AT&Tís shares are trading near the flat line.

Reports Q1 net credit losses of $2.4B, down 15% versus prior year period. CVA/DVA was $7M, or $4M after-tax, in the first quarter, compared to negative $319M, or negative $198M after-tax, in the prior year period. Q1 included a $210M tax charge related to corporate tax reforms enacted in two states. These reforms lowered marginal tax rates, resulting in a reduction in Citigroupís state deferred tax assets. CEO Michael Corbat said, ďDespite a quarter that was difficult for our company, we delivered strong results. Both our consumer and institutional businesses performed well and we grew both loans and deposits while holding the line on our expenses. We reduced our deferred tax assets more than any other quarter since the crisis and drove Citi Holdings closer to break even. $4B in net income helped generate $6B in regulatory capital during the quarter and increased our estimated Tier 1 Common ratio to 10.4% on a Basel III basis. Very cognizant of our shareholders desire to see a sustainable return of capital, we are engaged with the Fed to better understand their expectations regarding the CCAR process. We are committed to bringing our capital planning process to the highest possible standards, befitting an institution of our global reach. I will dedicate whatever resources and make whatever changes necessary to achieve this critical goal."
