Babcock & Wilcox is announcing plans to restructure its mPower Small Modular Reactor program to focus on technology development. B&W continues to believe in the strength of the mPower technology, but without the ability to secure significant additional investors or customer Engineering, Procurement and Construction contracts to provide the financial support necessary to develop and deploy mPower reactors, the current development pace will be slowed. B&W notified the U.S. Department of Energy of its plans for reduced spending, indicating it would work with the DOE and other stakeholders during the next one to two months to confirm the best path to develop a mutually agreeable plan including program milestones for continuing the cost-shared industry partnership program. B&W expects to invest up to $15M annually, beginning in 3Q14.

Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises announced that a joint venture including its Denmark-based subsidiary, Babcock & Wilcox Volund A/S, has been awarded a contract to design and build the Teesside Renewable Energy Plant near Middlesbrough, England. B&W Volund also was awarded a separate contract to provide operations and maintenance services for the plant. B&W's portions of the two contracts total more than $190M. B&W Volund, through its U.K. subsidiary and a joint venture with Lagan Construction Group Limited, has contracted with developers Eco2 Ltd. and Temporis Capital to build the 40 megawatt waste wood fired biomass power plant for Port Clarence Energy Ltd. The project scope includes a boiler and environmental controls designed by B&W Volund and its Gotaverken Miljo AB subsidiary, including a dry flue gas desulfurization system, fabric filter baghouse, continuous emissions monitoring equipment and a DynaGrate fuel combustion system. The plant is designed to burn 34 tons of waste wood per hour.
