Stocks on Wall Street were higher on encouraging domestic data and a rally in oil. Stock futures traded near fair value but improved slightly following the better than expected data in the durable goods report. The futures action led to a higher open for the broader market, which stalled just a few minutes after the open. The averages regained their upside momentum following the surprisingly better than expected pending home sales report. The market continued to gain ground until each of the major indices gained at least 0.7%. The market then drifted into the close as investors began their watch for tomorrow's Supreme Court ruling on healthcare… ECONOMIC EVENTS: Orders for U.S. durable goods rose 1.1% in May after falling in the prior two months. U.S. May pending home sales rose 5.9% from previous month. In Europe, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said there is no quick solution to the euro crisis ahead of a EU summit set for tomorrow... MARKET NEWS: Barclays (BCS) paid $450M to settle accusations that it attempted to manipulate key interest rates. Best Buy (BBY) founder Richard Schulze is working with Credit Suisse on selling its remaining stake in the company. Sony (SNE) CEO Kazuo Hirai defended the company's revival plan, saying its sales will grow by a third in 2 years. Disgruntled Porsche (POAHY) investors are demanding $5B in damage, claiming that the automaker misled them about plans to take over Volkswagen (VLKAY)... MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers were Loral (LORL), up $7.75, or 13.42%, to $65.49, after the company announced it would sell Space Systems/Loral to MDA for more than $1B, and Amarin (AMRN), up $1.13, or 8.59%, to $14.29, after the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued "reasons for allowance" on its website for the company's '889 patent. Noteworthy losers included O'Reilly Automotive (ORLY), down $13.82, or 14.34%, to $82.61, after it lowered its Q2 outlook, and Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG), down $23.63, or 5.69%, to $391.78, after ITG announced the company’s Q2 revenues are trending below consensus… INDICES: The Dow gained 93.02, or 0.74%, to 12,627.69; the Nasdaq rose 21.26, or 0.74%, to 2,875.32; and the S&P 500 added 11.86, or 0.90%, to 1,331.85.

Hedge-fund investor Daniel Loeb's Third Point LLC increased its stake in Sony Corp. as it moved to persuade the company to launch an IPO of its entertainment division, reports the Wall Street Journal. Third Point added about 5M shares to its Sony stake, for a total of 70M shares, or 6.9% of the company. This morning in Tokyo, Loeb's fimr sent a letter from him to Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai reiterating their argument that Sony should sell a 15% to 20% stake in its entertainment arm, which comprises the company's movie and music businesses.
