12:42 EDTBBRYBlackBerry rises after Classic launch, BGC upgrade
Shares of BlackBerry (BBRY) are rising after the company unveiled its new BlackBerry Classic smartphone and research firm BGC Financial upgraded the stock to Buy from Hold. WHAT'S NEW: Blackberry Classic features a browser that is three times faster than BlackBerry's Bold 9900 device, along with 60% more screen space and 50% more battery life, the company said. The device's QWERTY keyboard enables fast typing by eliminating pressure points and providing carefully calibrated feedback, the company stated. BlackBerry Classic features a new operating system that includes the company's first digital assistant and gives users the ability to access content from the smartphone when they are on other devices. ANALYST UPGRADE: BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis upgraded BlackBerry ahead of the company's third quarter results, due to be reported on Friday. BlackBerry is in the early stages of turning itself around, but the company has increased its credibility with investors, partly by reducing its costs, focusing on its core strengths, and launching strategic partnerships, Gillis believes. Meanwhile, the company's Passport phone, a device launched by the company in September that targets business users, has been well-received by that group, Gillis said. The Passport should increase the company's profit margins and may help its Q3 results beat expectations, Gillis stated. Given BlackBerry's relatively low valuation of $5B, any success in the market could significantly boost its share price, added the analyst, who raised his price target on the shares to $12.50 from $11. PRICE ACTION: In early afternoon trading, BlackBerry rose 3.7% to $9.86.

12:43 EDTBBRYBlackBerry short squeeze possible after launch, earnings, Goldman says
Shares of BlackBerrry (BBRY) could undergo a short squeeze this week, driven by the launch of the company's new BlackBerry Classic smartphone and the company's earnings conference call, Goldman Sachs wrote in a note to investors today. WHAT'S NEW: The launch of the Classic on Wednesday, along with BlackBerry's earnings conference call on Friday, could generate a short squeeze in BlackBerry's stock, Goldman analyst Simona Jankowski wrote. BlackBerry's Q3 earnings per share should be "largely in-line" with the consensus outlook, as higher hardware revenues should be more than offset by a decline in legacy service revenues, the analyst stated. However, the company's EPS for its quarter ended in February should beat expectations, driven by the launch of the Classic, Jankowski forecast. Still, she kept a Neutral rating on the stock. WHAT'S NOTABLE: According to Jankowski, the short interest in BlackBerry shares has risen to 21%. PRICE ACTION: In early afternoon trading, BlackBerry fell 1.7% to $9.67. The stock is off its low for the day of $9.40. BlackBerry shares have dropped about 12% over the last three months.

08:50 EDTBBRYBlackBerry CEO says China entry won't be rushed, won't include takeover
BlackBerry (BBRY) Executive Chairman and CEO John Chen, in a post to his LinkedIn account entitled "Don't Believe The Hype," stated that he has recently I’ve been advised to capitalize on Kim Kardashian’s pronouncements that BlackBerry phones are her “heart and soul,” or talk up plans to enter the China market, "however preliminary they are today." Chen said BlackBerry's focus right now is on extending its security foundation with new solutions for the enterprise and that it "cannot and will not" chase sensationalism. "As for China, rest assured that we are developing a well-thought out plan that will take into account many factors, including timing and our long-term strategy. It won’t be rushed because it’s exciting or turned away from because of security concerns. And it won’t include a takeover," Chen wrote in his post. Reference Link
