The U.S. Defense Department is accelerating plans to seek rival bids for two satellites, reports the Wall Street Journal. The open contest could end a near-monopoly from Boeing (BA) and Lockheed Martin (LMT) as Elon Musk's SpaceX could join the fray. Musk's SpaceX is expected to secure regulatory approval this year or in early 2015 to launch smaller Pentagon payloads. Reference Link

Boeing was awarded a $321.8M cost-plus-incentive-fee undefinitized contract to complete development of the base line Apache attack helicopter, and for the integration of modifications. Work will be performed in Mesa, Arizona, with an estimated completion date of March 31, 2018. Bids were solicited with one received. FY15 research, development, testing, and evaluation funds in the amount of $51.46M were obligated at the time of the award.

The Department of Defense is enacting stricter rules on how defense companies can spent $4B of the department's research budget, following a report that explained that much of the budget was used to increase contractors' bids or to develop their own proprietary technology, reports the Wall Street Journal. Publicly traded companies in the space include BAE Systems (BAESY), Boeing (BA), General Dynamics (GD), Lockheed Martin (LMT), Northrop Grumman (NOC), Raytheon (RTN) and United Technologies (UTX).

CAE (CAE) announced that is has won approximately C$220M worth of Defence and Security contracts during its fourth quarter to provide simulation products and upgrades as well as training services for global military customers. Some of the key contracts include providing a C-130J simulator to the United States Air Force; a range of C-130J training systems and upgrades for the Royal Australian Air Force; simulator upgrades and training services for the Royal Air Force; M-346 simulators for the Italian Air Force; in-service support for the British Army's Warrior infantry fighting vehicle training systems; and support services for the NATO Joint Lynx helicopter simulator. Under subcontract from Lockheed Martin (LMT), CAE will design and manufacture a C-130J weapon systems trainer for the United States Air Force Air Mobility Command. CAE has been awarded a series of contracts from Australia's Defence Material Organisation and Lockheed Martin to upgrade and enhance elements of the C-130J training system at RAAF Base Richmond. The United Kingdom Ministry of Defence has awarded CAE several upgrade and modification contract amendments for simulator training services at CAE's Medium Support Helicopter Aircrew Training Facility. The United Kingdom Ministry of Defence has awarded CAE a four-year contract to provide logistics support and maintenance services on the British Army's suite of Warrior infantry fighting vehicle direct and indirect fire trainers. The NATO Support Agency has contracted CAE to provide maintenance and support services on the CAE-built Lynx full-mission flight trainer based at Naval Air Station Nordholz in Germany.

Splunk (SPLK) announced it was awarded a contract to support Lockheed Martinís (LMT) F-35 Lightning II Program. Splunk has provided Lockheed Martin with Splunk Enterprise to monitor and analyze IT systems and network behavior for the Autonomic Logistics Information System, which supports the F-35 Lightning II, a 5th generation fighter jet. Splunk Enterprise is initially being used by Lockheed Martin in 25 different operating environments for IT operations and application delivery, analyzing machine data from the systems and networks supporting the ALIS infrastructure to help ensure applications are operating at peak performance.

Boeing (BA) last week reported 184 first quarter deliveries, up from 161 a year ago in the same period, while rival Airbus (EADSY) reported that its Q1 deliveries slipped to 134 planes from 141 in the same period of last year, reported Reuters.
