The U.S. Defense Department is accelerating plans to seek rival bids for two satellites, reports the Wall Street Journal. The open contest could end a near-monopoly from Boeing (BA) and Lockheed Martin (LMT) as Elon Musk's SpaceX could join the fray. Musk's SpaceX is expected to secure regulatory approval this year or in early 2015 to launch smaller Pentagon payloads. Reference Link

Lockheed Martin Corp., Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co., Fort Worth, Texas, is being awarded a $232,794,734 cost-plus-incentive-fee modification to the previously awarded F-35 Lightning II Low Rate Initial Production Lot VI contract. This modification provides for non-recurring sustainment activities, to include procurement of 19 training devices and 69 items of complex support equipment. Work is expected to be completed in June 2017. Fiscal 2012 aircraft procurement funds and international partner funds in the amount of $232,794,734 will be obligated at time of award, $190,999,120 of which will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. General Dynamics (GD) C4 Systems SATCOM Technologies received a contract from Lockheed Martin (LMT) to design and build the ground structures and integrate the mechanical systems for the U.S. Air Force Space Fence program. The new advanced ground-based radar system will enhance the way the U.S. detects and tracks more than 100K orbiting objects in space and increase the ability to prevent space-based collisions. The improved situational awareness will help protect space-based assets like the International Space Station from potential collisions that could severely damage, disable or destroy it. Construction of the Space Fence ground system will begin mid-2015 on the Kwajalein Atoll in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. The U.S. Air Force contract value awarded to Lockheed Martin is greater than $910M.

The U.S. Army Aviation Technology Directorate selected the Sikorsky-Boeing team to continue the development of the SB>1 Defiant, a medium-lift helicopter configured to Sikorsky’s X2 coaxial design, through flight testing.
