14:54 EDTAZSEYJanus gives back some gains as analysts differ on impact of Gross hiring
Two research firms had different views today on investment management company Janus Capital (JNS). On Friday, the stock soared 43% following the company's announcement that it had hired Bill Gross, the widely known founder and bond guru of Allianz's (AZSEY) PIMCO unit. BEARISH TAKE: Gross' hiring will not attract enough additional assets to Janus' funds to justify the jump in the stock on Friday, JPMorgan analyst Kenneth Worthington wrote in a note to investors today. Janus is likely to raise $3B-$6B of fixed income assets over the next year, the analyst estimated. Pensions and endowment funds are not likely to invest a large amount of money in Janus, given its limited track record and infrastructure, contended Worthington. Additionally, the performance at Gross' unit at Pimco had deteriorated in recent years and he is 70 years old, making it unclear how much longer he will actively manage funds, Worthington said. The analyst raised his price target on Janus to $13 from $11 but kept an Underperform rating on the shares. BULLISH TAKE: Morgan Stanley analyst Thomas Whitehead upgraded Janus to Equal Weight from Underweight. The hiring of Gross is "a landmark moment" for Janus and it would take just a small share of the $300B-$500B that Gross managed at Pimco to make Janus' outlook compelling, Whitehead contended. The hiring could transform investor sentiment towards the name, and strengthen Janus' brand and relations, the analyst believes. However, the hiring does create risks and uncertainty, given Gross's recent performance and the nature of his departure from PIMCO, along with the coming increase in interest rates, Whitehead warned. He set an $18 price target on the shares. PRICE ACTION: In afternoon trading, Janus fell 7.5% to $14.70.
