14:44 EDTANAutoNation technical comments ahead of earnings
The shares have been moving sideways in a narrow range since February of this year. The low of that range is at $61.50 and the high is at $66.50, with the notable exception of the single high point at the 52-week high at $67.50. On a long-term chart this sideways motion is not even noticeable, but is simply part of a long-running bullish price channel that began in mid-2012. On strongly bullish news, a breakout above the range high and 52-week high would be likely. That would put the shares into uncharted territory and open up a run to the $70 area. By extending the long-term price channel (10-year chart basis) the $70 area is its upper-bound. If the news is a bearish surprise, the first downside test of significance would be at $61.50, which is the 10-month moving average and the range low. This average has been a good proxy for an uptrend support line. Next support would then be at $60. A sustained move for more than a month at or below that level would break the long-term uptrend. Support below $60 would be at $57.48.
